Neway International are seeking a Principal Planning Officer to join our client based with North Yorkshire Council.
Location: County Hall, Northallerton, DL7 8AE (South Team – Selby)
Hours: 37 per week, Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:30
Pay Rate: £34.00 PAYE / £42.87 Umbrella
About the Client
North Yorkshire Council plays a key role in shaping sustainable development across the region. Their Planning Service supports growth, regeneration and community wellbeing, ensuring that development is well‑designed, deliverable and aligned with local policy. This temporary assignment supports a peak in workload within the South Team (Selby).
The Role
You will act as a Principal Planning Officer managing a varied and demanding caseload, with a particular focus on large‑scale residential schemes of approximately 100 units. The role requires strong technical expertise, confident decision‑making and the ability to work collaboratively with developers, agents, consultees and internal teams.
You will be required to attend the office one day per week and undertake your own site visits as part of the assessment process.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and determine major residential planning applications (circa 100 units)
Provide professional planning advice to applicants, agents, stakeholders and elected members
Prepare detailed reports, recommendations and supporting documentation
Lead negotiations to secure high‑quality, policy‑compliant development outcomes
Undertake site visits and assess proposals in line with planning legislation and local policy
Support the wider team during a peak in workload, contributing to timely and robust decision‑making
Represent the council at meetings, committees and public consultations where required
Candidate Requirements
Proven experience as a Planning Officer or Principal Planning Officer within a local authority
Strong track record managing large‑scale residential schemes
Excellent understanding of planning legislation, policy frameworks and development management processes
Confident in handling complex applications and balancing competing priorities
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, evidence‑based reports
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and conduct site visits
Professional, organised and able to work effectively with a range of stakeholders
