Summary

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own specialist interest and, depending on their expertise, to potentially deliver and develop this in conjunction with the Regional Neurosciences Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, or the Royal London Hospital. The post-holder will be expected to provide a maximum of 6 programmed activities as set out in the provisional timetable below. The job plan will include clinics across hospitals within the Princess Alexandra Hospitals NHS Trust which include the Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow), Herts and Essex (Bishop Stortford) Hospital and St Margaret’s Hospital (SMH). The post holder will also be expected to provide a consulting/review service for inpatients admitted under the Princess Alexandra Hospital DGH consultants. The post holder will also have links to the tertiary Regional Neurosciences centre (post will be aligned with either Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge) or the Royal London Hospital (Barts)), and access to multidisciplinary teams and assets such as Neuroradiology/ Neurophysiology. Part of CME/SPA can be scheduled to be supported at the tertiary centre if flexibility to move SPA to a Tuesday afternoon to allow attendance at consultant meetings/ post graduate seminars etc. Scope and range The successful candidate will join the existing establishment in delivering a broad range of general Neurology Services at PAHT, whilst at the same time supporting practitioners in primary care. The appointee will contribute to junior doctor training, participate in research, audit programmes, and take an active interest in the management of the specialty. Duties and responsibilities To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and general Neurology service. The post will serve to provide consultant advice and treatment to a variety of patients presenting with general Neurological problems (both inpatient and outpatient). To maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with neurological disease. To share responsibility with all Consultant colleagues for providing evidence-based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients. Provide clinical services in line with the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements, which are designed to ensure agreed qualities and standards are achieved, and in conjunction with colleagues, contribute to clinical governance activities (including audit and quarterly governance meetings). To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary working with the specialties working closely and regularly with Neurology. To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners and all other health care agencies. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. To develop services in your specialist area to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance. The nature of the service will necessitate close liaison with the Clinical Lead and Service Manager to provide clinical input in the business planning process and assistance with the service development on a regular basis. To actively contribute to the Neurology service and lead improvement work, in line with agreed policies or directives within the Trust. To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Operational Management team, Specialty Doctors, Clinical Director and Neurology Consultant Colleagues. Contribute to the teaching and training of junior staff and medical students attending the neurology department. To encourage and foster the audit process at clinical, managerial, and medical levels and to take part in regional audit in support of evidence-based medicine. Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME) including involvement in the regular clinical meetings and post graduate activities available. Demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels. It is the responsibility of the postholder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality and performance initiatives within the area of work. All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure.
