Summary

Maintaining a satisfactory awareness of current national pharmacy technical issues. Ensure that all services delivered by the Pharmacy accord with clinical governance criteria in relation to aspects such as risk management, adherence to the Duthie report and concordance with appropriate Trust policies and guidelines. Advising medical and nursing staff on drug use and encouraging compliance with the Trust Formulary at all times in order to foster rational and economic prescribing. Participating in audits associated with drug risk issues reported by medical, nursing and pharmacy staff. Providing a visiting technical service at remote sites according to the appropriate Service Level Agreements held with the Pharmacy department. Observe and have due regard to the General Pharmaceutical Council Standards for conduct, ethics and performance, where this is relevant to registered Pharmacy Technicians Suggesting and implementing improvements to services exercising professional responsibility, including lifelong learning within an open no blame culture. Be actively involved in providing a high quality dispensing service to the trust using specialised knowledge and skills gained through training and practical experience, using such skills, experience and knowledge to act as a role model to trainee technicians and Pharmacy Support Workers within the Department. Receive prescriptions and validate for compliance with local and legal requirements. Use knowledge and experience to accurately dispense a variety of pharmaceutical products including cytotoxic medicines, unlicensed products, intravenous injections and inflammable liquids by packaging and labelling items, issuing on the pharmacy computer system and completing relevant computer and written records. Accurately calculating quantities of medicines to be dispensed to patients Providing pharmaceutical advice using specialist knowledge gained through training and using reference sources such as the internet, reference books and pharmaceutical journals to provide up-to-date medicines information to patients and clinical staff referring to a pharmacist where necessary Using knowledge and experience to answer urgent queries in person and on the telephone often causing interruption when concentrating on accurately dispensing Participating in all aspects of dispensary cover according to the needs of the service Communicating face-to-face, by telephone and e-mail with patients and clinical staff Advising and counselling patients on the use of their medicines, side effects, dosage and further supplies including dealing with confused, partially sighted, hard of hearing, agitated and aggressive patients Calculating and receiving payment by cash, cheque or card of prescription charges or obtaining and validating proof of exemption Calculating the cost of private prescription charges using the pharmacy computer system for payment of private prescriptions. Providing information for the Finance department to generate invoices for outstanding charges Updating patient information and dispensing records on the pharmacy computer system. Completing written and computer records of dispensing Issuing high cost drugs in accordance with local policies under the supervision of a Pharmacist and with financial approval Retrieving filed prescriptions to provide prescribing information to GPs and clinical staff.
