The post involves working closely with Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and their offices as well as policy and communications teams, frontline services, such as the police and Border Force, charities and third sector organisations - to identify ministerial visit and event opportunities to support communications plans and policy priorities.

As a Senior Ministerial Visits and Events Manager to the Home Secretary, you will be planning and delivering high quality private, public and media facing events, visits and overseas trips. The key purpose of the role is to ensure that these engagements deliver on the Home Secretary’s priorities and personal preferences, enhance HM Government (HMG) objectives and support positive media coverage.

This is a high profile, demanding and fast-paced role, with a large degree of autonomy. You will be responsible for working with policy, communications and external teams, to design and deliver visits, primarily for the Home Secretary.

We will be looking for someone who uses their initiative and is able to be a self-starter. You will need to be resourceful and able to think on your feet; managing risks, weighing up options and making recommendations to senior officials and Ministers that will deliver a high-quality service. You will need to be resilient and able to manage competing priorities, often working at pace to deliver visits at short notice. You will also need to be familiar with the domestic political and media landscape and the Home Secretary’s priorities in order to ensure visit programs support objectives of HMG.

The team is a flexible resource, and the post-holder will be expected to support other colleagues during busy periods.

Reporting to the Head of Ministerial Visits & Events, the key responsibilities are:

  • Plan, co-ordinate and lead on high quality strategic, media facing visits for Ministers that deliver on the Home Secretary’s priorities and personal preferences.
  • Project manage, plan and deliver large-scale Home Office Ministerial events including speeches, receptions and summits, working with communications and policy colleagues across the department, as well as external partners.
  • Work as part of a team and individually to identify, recce and advance venues ahead of Ministerial visits, in the UK and internationally, when required.
  • Work closely with Ministers, Special Advisors, Private Office, communications and policy colleagues from within the Home Office and across government to deliver visits and events.
  • Proactively build peer-to-peer and senior relationships, both within the department and with external partners, to ensure the successful delivery of Ministerial visits and events and to help support future visit opportunities.
  • Work as part of a team, as well as individually, to proactively maintain the team’s planning, evaluation and business tools and ensure these are up to date and accurate.

Note: The post-holder may be required to carry out other duties within the scope of the grade and within the limits of their skill, competence and training.

Working pattern

Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis. Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% office attendance and attending other locations as required by the role will count towards this.

Travel

The post holder must be willing to regularly travel within the UK to recce and to deliver visits and events, as well as staying overnight when required. There may be a requirement to travel internationally occasionally, according to business need. There may be a need for some early starts and late finishes, according to the requirements of specific visits and events.
