This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to take up a leadership role in Road Transport Group’s Future Transport System (FTS) Directorate in driving forwards our aim to make DfT a leading department in the use of AI. Technology will radically change road transport in the next decade, impacting users, businesses, and infrastructure. Advances in data, AI, and connectivity promise improved safety, decarbonisation, and efficiency gains. However, they also pose challenges for areas such as cyber security, regulation, and public trust.

We are seeking a proactive and driven candidate with experience in policy and project development and delivery to lead discrete projects and initiatives. This is a unique opportunity to shape high-impact projects from the ground up, working across multiple teams within Road Transport Group (RTG), wider Department, and with a range of external delivery partners.
The role holder will also take ownership of delivering against actions set out in DfT’s AI Action Plan that are relevant to RTG, including supporting DfT’s Agencies.
We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a significant grasp of the applications of AI for analysis, efficiencies and automation to join our team.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Act as a visible and trusted leader across RTG, building relationships with internal teams, external partners and senior leadership to champion AI adoption and responsible innovation.
- Lead the development of project plans, business cases and commercial arrangements for new projects.
- Develop strategic AI-related policy thinking to deliver against actions in the Transport AI Action Plan.
- Work with relevant teams to ensure data in roads policy areas is AI ready.
- Work closely with Advanced Data Analytics Division to co-develop project plans on the use of AI to modernise road transport and deliver better services to the public.
- Work across RTG and with our agencies to share best practice and learnings.
