We are excited to advertise this exciting opportunity to join the Psychology and Psychotherapy service in Older Adults at SLAM, working primarily into our Community Mental Health team for Older Adults in Southwark.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work alongside multidisciplinary colleagues in the CMHT and provide a highly specialised psychology/psychotherapy service to Older Adults referred to the psychology and psychotherapy service. This includes offering specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.

We are also currently engaging in Community Transformation work across our CMHTs and would welcome a candidate who is keen to support service development and new ways of working, particularly as it relates to access, experience, and outcomes in our Psychology & Psychotherapy service.

Applicants would benefit from having experience/training working with people with complex emotional needs, co-morbid physical health difficulties and/or cognitive impairment as a result of a neurodegenerative condition.

This post is also offered as a preceptorship role, with candidates progressing from band 7 to 8a following successful demonstration of the necessary competencies.
• To provide highlyspecialist psychological interventions to Older Adults within the Community Mental Health Team referred to the Psychology and Psychotherapy service, including specialist assessment, treatment, planning,implementationand monitoring of outcomes.

• To contribute to enabling other staff, serviceusersand carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment.

• To provide clinical supervision, teaching and consultation asappropriate, functioning as a lead specialistin Older Adult's mental health.

• Topromoteservice evaluation,auditand research.

• To work as an autonomous professional withinregistration bodyguidelines and codes ofconduct, andguided by principles and policies or procedures of the service, taking responsibility for interpreting policies within defined parameters.

• To agree outcomes/results with clinical/professional lead and to decide how they are best achieved.

• To be active in the provision of staff support within their area, including but not limited to Critical Incident Staff Support and Reflect-Support-Resolve. Toparticipate, as a recipient, in staff support work whenappropriate.


South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust(SLaM)providethe widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards,outpatientand community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth,Lewishamand Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley,Bromleyand Greenwich.

KR 1Clinical and Client Care

• To provide specialistpsychologicalassessments,formulations and interventions for Older Adults within the Older Adults Community Health Team presenting with a range of difficulties including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, complex emotional needs, dementia, co-morbid physical health difficulties, and psychosis.

• To provide culturallyappropriate psychologicalor psychotherapeuticinterventions with carers or families of referred clients whenrequired.

• To assess andmonitorrisk and draw upappropriate riskmanagement plans.

• To provide reports, including relevant formulation,opinionand interventions,in order toinform referrers and, whereappropriate, service users and their families.

• To select and deliver evidence-based specialist therapeutic interventions, drawing from a spectrum ofideas andmodels,monitoringoutcomeandmodifyingand adapting interventions as necessary, based on thehighly complexfactors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, couple,familyor group.

• Topromotepsychologicalsupport forcarers (or families asappropriate)of referred clients.



KR 2Contributing to team or service clinical functioning

• To contribute to the effective working of the team or service and to a psychologically/psychotherapeuticallyinformed framework for the service.

• To contribute to the team or service’s delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.

• To be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.

• Toadviseother members of the service on specialist psychological/psychotherapeuticcare of clients.

• To liaise with referrers, GPs and other professionals concerned with clientsin order todevelop and review care plans.

• To utilise theory, evidence-basedliteratureand research to supportevidence-basedpractice in individual work and work with other team members.

• To liaise with the service/s MDT and other professionals.



KR 3Policy and service development

• To implement policies and procedures in own area of work, and to propose improvements or beneficial changes.

• To contribute to service development through undertaking andparticipatinginappropriate projects.

• To contribute to the consultation and engagement of service users in planning and delivering services which meet the needs of local communities.


KR 4Care or management of resources

• To take care of, and use carefully, the Trust’s equipment and physical resources.

• To ensure that the post-holder has sufficient resources by estimating future needs and requesting or ordering supplies as needed.

• To ensure the cleanliness and safe functioning and use of equipment that will be used by clients or other persons.

• Tomonitorand advise clients on the safe use of materials and processes.

• To ensure adequate confidential and safe storage for artefacts produced duringthetherapy process in line with professional guidelines.

• Tobe responsible forobtaining,storingandmaintainingall materials and equipment for the provision of therapy in work setting within budgetary constraints.

• To ensure that the post-holder has sufficient resources by estimating future needs and requesting or ordering supplies as needed.

• To authorise client travel expenses (ifrequired)


KR 5Management and supervision

• Tobe responsible forthe allocation and/or clinical supervision of the work ofmore junior psychological practitionerswith support from a more seniorpractitioner.

• To supervise traineepsychological practitionerswithin own area of specialismhaving completedthe relevant Supervision Training.

• To contribute to the appraisal of more junior psychological practitionersasappropriate.


• To contribute to the recruitment of more junior psychological practitionersasappropriate.

• To provide supervision for the psychologicaland/or psychotherapeuticwork of other multi-disciplinary staff asappropriate.


KR 6Teaching and Training

• To undertake occasional teaching and training ofpreand post- qualificationpsychological practitioners,and specialised training to other professions asappropriate.

• To contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills base within theservice bymaintainingan active awareness of current developments in psychological therapyand by implementing knowledge gained in practice.

• Todisseminateresearch and service evaluation findings through presentations and published articles.

KR 7Record-keeping and Information Governance

• To ensure that all information generated by own work is recorded as required by Trust policies and local procedures.

• Toinitiate/undertake, support and supervise regular complex service evaluation and audits.

KR10General

• To travel tohome visits, community placements, meetingsasappropriateand across the Trust whenrequired.

• To be aware of risk relating to aggressive and challenging behaviour amongst the clientgroup, andfollow trust policies relating to its management.

• To respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations (such as challenging behaviour, abuse etc) and to support others involved in such situations through Trust-wide approaches including Critical Incident StaffSupport and Reflect-Support-Resolve.
