Job Description:
Royal Gunpowder Mills is a charitable organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and sharing the rich history and natural heritage of 175 acres of historic buildings, wildlife, and archaeological sites situated in Waltham Abbey, Essex. We are home to 21 listed buildings and much of the site is designated as a Scheduled Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Our visitor offer spans several attractions including railways, tractor tours, wild deer and museum exhibits. We aim to conserve, research, and display the historical, archaeological, and natural significance of site, and we undertake a range of educational, visitor, and volunteering programs as well as letting the site and its unique buildings out for hire, hosting events and film productions.

Royal Gunpowder Mills seeks to appoint three Visitor Experience Officers ahead of our 2026 season, with training beginning in March ahead of opening days every Saturday and Sunday from April – September. This is a zero hours contract role, paid at London Living Wage. We anticipate a minimum of five days work per month across a rota, as well as potential for additional days to support staff cover, public events and private hires.

The postholder will be primarily responsible for working in a team of two to ensure the smooth running of the site’s customer-facing operations on our opening weekend days, including opening and closing, security of the site, ensuring a smooth visitor experience, ensuring full operation of our ticketing point, café, shop and attractions, and supporting our volunteer team in their operational roles.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication, numeracy and organisational skills, the ability to work well in a team, and will be a creative self-starter with a positive and proactive attitude. An interest in industrial heritage, science or nature is important, and our ideal candidate is friendly and approachable.
This role is ideal for individuals seeking a flexible working arrangement or an entry-level role in the cultural sector.
