Working Pattern: Term time only - 44 working weeks - 37 hours per week - this role will be required to work on a rolling rota
Location: Based at Hop Oast, Horsham but may require occasion travel to any of the 3 main depots -Clapham, Drayton or Hop Oast (Horsham)
Start Date: Please note that this role will not commence before April 2026

The Transport Provision team is currently recruiting for a Passenger Assistant Coordinator. The team is spread across all three of our main depots in Chichester, Worthing and Horsham. This role will be based at Hop Oast depot and is responsible for supporting the safe delivery of passenger transport services for children with special needs and vulnerable adults who may need urgent medical intervention during their journey. The role requires you to supervise the Passenger Assistants (PAs) who support our passengers during their journeys based at your depot.

Transport can be undertaken by contractors in taxis/minibuses or by the County Council's internal team directly. These journeys are supported during school terms and the team consists of approximately 60 PAs. These PAs are there to act as chaperones and have basic first aid training and you will be responsible be recruiting and training them.

The focus of this role is to ensure that PAs are allocated to the appropriate resource daily. You will need to proactively plan and allocate the PAs accordingly to ensure we can deliver our statutory services.

The Opportunity

In this role you will deliver a professional, customer focused service to ensure a safe and efficient passenger transport service. You will provide full supervision of PAs in your area, lead on recruitment of new PAs and support with training and induction as required.

You will be the first point of contact for multiple stakeholders, interactions with parents as an example could be related to concerns or issues and you will need to deal with this in a professional manner. You will need to manage responses and deal accordingly with issues or incidents.

The role could require regular travel around the county so some flexibility will be required. You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Pool cars and pool bikes are available.

About you

Some of the key skills, experience and knowledge required to be successful in the role include:

  • Full car driving license
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbally, to enable clear exchanges of information with various stakeholders and write concise reports in relation to incidents or investigations. You'll also need good IT skills to be able to produce these.
  • Ability to identify problems, plan solutions and then deliver these solutions, making the best use of resource available and ensuring the highest levels of customer service are delivered alongside this.
  • Strong customer focus to ensure the leadership and support you provide assists the team to deliver a great customer experience in the field.
  • Good people management skills to successfully lead the team, train them where appropriate to meet objectives and necessary timescales.
  • Good organisational skills to plan and utilise resource and the ability to remain calm under pressure when there are conflicting demands.

About us

The Transport Provision Team is part of the Transport Co-ordination Department. The team plans and provides passenger transport solutions. These services are provided to eligible children and allows them to get to school which supports the bus network providing millions of bus journeys each year.

The Transport Provision Team provides specialist transport for people with special needs, using its own fleet of vehicles, many of which are fully accessible. The Transport Provision Team covers the whole of West Sussex and operates out of three bases in Chichester, Horsham and Worthing.
