The Transport Provision team is currently recruiting for a transport coordinator. The team is spread across all three of our main depots in Chichester, Worthing and Horsham. This role will be based at Clapham depot and is responsible for supporting the delivery of passenger transport services for children with special needs and vulnerable adults in this area. This service is delivered using a variety of vehicles and this role will lead on recruitment and management of around 70 drivers. The role will require you to make sure that vehicles and driver resources are in the right places at the right time daily. You will need to proactively plan and allocate the resources accordingly to ensure we can deliver our statutory services.

The primary focus of this role is the fleet and driver resource management. To be success in the role, you will need to understand the customer need and match resource to this in a timely manner ensuring cost efficiency too.

The Opportunity

In this role you will lead on the recruitment of drivers for the area. You will report into an Area Coordinator and will support them by collaborating with community groups to share resource and enhance our offer and reputation. In this role, you will also work closely with Fleet Management to ensure that fleet vehicles are maintained, and the team is resourced accordingly.

You will be responsible for delivering a professional, customer focused service making sure that the fleet and driver resource are meeting the service requirements daily. You will supervise the lead driver as well as having line management responsibility for the rest of the drivers in your area.

You will be responsible for the coordination of driver and vehicle allocation to required routes. You will need to work with the fleet management service and third-party providers to ensure suitable vehicles are available as and when required. You will work with Planners to ensure Transport Care Plans (TCPs) and route schedules are kept up to date, and update drivers on any changes.

The role could require regular travel around the county so some flexibility will be required. Outside work in sometimes inclement weather may be required also.

About you

Some of the key skills, experience and knowledge required to be successful in the role include:

  • Full car driving license with D1/PCV preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of passenger transport operations and the relevant safety equipment that goes alongside this.
  • Knowledge of relevant transport legislation and the ability to apply this in practical work.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbally, to enable clear exchanges of information with various stakeholders and write concise reports in relation to incidents or investigations. You'll also need good IT skills to be able to produce these.
  • Strong customer focus to ensure the leadership and support you provide assists the team to deliver a great customer experience in the field.
  • Good People Management skills to successfully lead the team, train them where appropriate to meet objectives and necessary timescales.

The Transport Provision Team is part of the Transport Co-ordination Department. The team plans and provides passenger transport solutions. These services are provided to eligible children and allows them to get to school which supports the bus network providing millions of bus journeys each year.

The Transport Provision Team provides specialist transport for people with special needs, using its own fleet of vehicles, many of which are fully accessible. The Transport Provision Team covers the whole of West Sussex and operates out of three bases in Chichester, Horsham and Worthing.
