Trust Doctor in Urology
This post will provide training opportunities in operating theatre (inpatient and daycase), diagnostics and outpatient clinics, along with management of emergencies and elective inpatients. The post would be tailored to the level of experience and training of the appointee. From an educational perspective, there will be opportunities in running supervised audits, presentations and teaching. Publication and presentation of work at international and national meetings is very much encouraged and supported.
The urology department comprises 9 full time consultants, Urology ST registrars, Senior clinical fellows, one surgical education fellow, one CT, two FY2s and three FY1. The department is supported by a number of specialist nurses and cancer nurse specialists. Diagnostic and local anaesthetic treatment services are provided within the on-site dedicated urology diagnostic and treatment unit, including flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, TULA and LATP.
The department provides subspecialist work in laparoscopic (transperitoneal and retroperitoneal) surgery, endourology including PCNL and HoLEP, paediatric urology and andrology. We are a busy unit covering a population of 570 000 which can double during peak holiday season. We have a high throughput of patients and can offer excellent training opportunities.
The candidate will be expected to have completed basic surgical training (MRCS) and have an interest in pursuing a career in Urology. Previous experience in Urology is essential.Applicants are required to be GMC registered.
Clinical work depending on experience . You will also participate in a 1:6 out of hours/on call rota.
• Assessment & management of in-patients.

• Attend multi-disciplinary ward meetings.
• Attend out-patients.
• Assessment of patients in the Emergency Department.
• Fulfil the duties of the weekly timetable including out of hours responsibilities.
• Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of clinical services.
• Share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the patients.
• Have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
• Actively participate in departmental & Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance & Audit.
• Attend meetings as appropriate.

This post will provide the opportunity to develop non-clinical skills and experience and to undertake experience in education, research or quality improvement.

General Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
• Provision within the department of a urology service to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
• care of urology inpatients and emergency admissions.
• Any responsibility that relates to a special interest.
• Professional supervision of junior medical staff.
• Responsibilities for carrying out teaching.
• Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.
• Involvement in research if applicable.
• Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust such as domiciliary consultations, or services provided by the Trust for other agencies e.g., the prison service (This excludes work done under direct arrangements between an individual doctor and a third party e.g., Category 2).
• A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.
• The post holder must at all times carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy. • It is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and in accordance with the current quality initiatives within the area of work.
• All staff who have access to or transfer data are responsible for that data and must respect confidentiality and comply with the requirement of the Data Protection Act 1998, in line with the Trusts policies. Such information should not be released without the consent of the patient/client/staff member concerned unless required by a court order.
• The post holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust’s activities.
• Staff are required to comply with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in line with Trust Policy.
• The post holder is required to comply with Trust policy on the implementation of Working Time Regulations (1998, 2009 amendment) including declaration of hours worked and breaks taken by undertaking monitoring exercises when required and reporting any instances where the pattern of working hours may constitute a health and safety risk to the post holder, patients, public and other Trust employees. The post holder will not be subjected to any unlawful detriment by reporting any concerns under the regulations.
• The post holder will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
• The post holder will be required to participate in the annual appraisal process.
• The post holder will be required to complete annual updates in mandatory training.
• The successful candidate will become a member of the urology Department and will be encouraged to attend departmental meetings and regional training programme.
• Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required but a planned and cost-effective approach will be expected.
• Any other duties that may be required from time to time.
