Prison Offender Manager (POM) - Non-Operational
Salary: £31,514
Mitie Care & Custody (C&C) is driven by a bold vision: to establish HMP Millsike as a place of restoration and rehabilitation, where prisoners can unlock their full potential and make meaningful, positive changes in their lives. We are excited by the opportunity Millsike presents: a blank canvas on which we can paint a bright future for our prisoners. Our mission is clear: to create an environment that empowers, inspires, and supports individuals to re-enter society with hope, purpose, and a life plan. To achieve this, we will set a culture of rehabilitation and restoration underpinned by integrity and high expectations. Prisoners will experience a dramatic shift from traditional prison environments. Millsike will be a vibrant, bustling community, teeming with industry, activity and opportunities for personal growth. Above all, we will ensure our approach offers a deep sense of safety/respect, through a supportive, uplifting environment, that helps prisoners to see their potential and that unlocks a brighter future for all.
Job objectives and responsibilities
This role offers an exciting opportunity to assist in reducing reoffending by supporting behaviour change in prisoners. At HMP Millsike, you'll work in a vibrant environment focused on rehabilitation, restoration, and resettlement through a risk-informed approach.
Based in the Offender Management Unit (OMU), you'll handle all aspects of a prisoner's case, including risk management, parole applications, and sentence planning. As a Non-operational Prison Offender Manager (POM), you'll manage and assess low to medium-risk prisoners, creating and evaluating their sentence plans to reduce reoffending.
This non-operational role requires no line management responsibilities. We're looking for candidates with transferable skills from various sectors. You'll engage regularly with prisoners, maintaining open communication and prioritizing face-to-face interactions.
The OMU is fast-paced, liaising with internal and external agencies like courts, police, and probation services. You'll receive mandatory training to perform this specialist role effectively.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have intermediate IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, along with experience in updating central data systems. They should be capable of analysing complex information to make informed assessments and decisions. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, particularly for interactions with prisoners, professionals, and during hearings such as Parole Boards. Experience in planning and coordinating work is also required.
The candidate should possess self-confidence and the ability to understand and assess risk, especially in relation to offending behaviour risk and thus be willing to complete the mandatory training that accompanies this post (OASYS - Offender Assessment System). They must be able to think on their feet and demonstrate resilience. The ability to work efficiently under pressure and maintain a positive problem-solving approach is crucial. Organizational skills and adaptability to legislative and procedural changes are important. The candidate should be a team player with the ability to empathize constructively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. A commitment to completing all mandatory training and engaging in continuous learning is necessary.
As a business, Mitie Care & Custody is committed to diversity and inclusion and we would welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds including veterans, those looking for a career change, and people who have experience in social care or a learning environment. Full training will be given where applicable, and we would encourage anyone who might be thinking about a role in a secure establishment to get in touch.
