At HMRC, we are already one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world and have one of the largest IT infrastructures and data sources in the UK.

With 50 million customers to serve, over 60,000 colleagues to support, and £840+ billion to collect to fund UK Plc, our IT operation is huge.

For those who are up to the challenge, we offer unique and unparalleled opportunities to work with some of the newest technologies and make a real, lasting difference.

HMRC is made up of Customer Groups which work independently towards a common goal. Our role sits within HMRC’s Chief Digital Product Office, part of the Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO) Group, which delivers in-house solutions for a broad range of technical and operational issues as well as running key digital services (like the Personal Tax Account and HMRC App) through which our customers interact with us.

Job description
As a Senior Performance Analyst, you will play a key role in delivering performance analysis across a portfolio of live digital services.

You’ll work closely with Product Managers, User Researchers, Design, Content and Interaction among others in agile product teams to ensure the services we deliver are utilising informed data driven evidence to continuously improve.

You’ll use your expertise in analytical toolsets such as SQL, Power BI (DAX), Splunk (Spath), Regex and R/Python to analyse user behaviour, identify trends, and create compelling data stories, driving change through evidence based analytics.

You’ll also support and mentor performance analysts directly as well as supporting the wider community, helping to build capability across HMRC.

Person specification
We are looking for a proactive and analytical individual who is passionate about using data to improve digital services. You will be confident working with complex datasets, influencing stakeholders, and supporting others to develop their skills.

Responsibilities:

Deliver performance analysis for a distinct tax regime or digital platform within Customer Engagement, utilising data to understand user behaviour and service performance.
Work with stakeholders to define and monitor KPIs through the implementation of performance frameworks, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and user needs.
Use tools such as SQL, Power BI, and Splunk to extract, transform, and visualise data.
Create clear, actionable insights and communicate them effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
Mentor and support Performance Analysts, helping them grow their technical and analytical skillset.
Collaborate across disciplines, including user research, product management, and service design, to build a holistic view of service performance.

Essential Criteria:

• Ability to undertake performance analysis and provide insight, with skills specified for the ‘Senior Performance Analyst’ role in the Government Digital and Data profession (see further information here).
• Experience in performance analysis or a similar analytical role, ideally in a digital or data-driven environment.
• Proficiency in SQL, and experience using Power BI or similar for data visualisation.
• Ability to work with large, complex datasets and derive meaningful insights.
• Experience working with stakeholders to define KPIs and performance measures.
• A user-centred design mindset, with a commitment to improving public services through data and insight.
