The Resident Doctor Peer Support role is a leadership/mentor role aimed at Speciality/Core/Internal Medicine doctors who are at grade ST1/CT1/IMT1 or above. The role provides 40% protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focusing on, for example, service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce and sustainability.
The Resident Doctor Peer Support will ideally report to and be mentored by the medical director, a nominated deputy, or other senior clinical leader.
The mentor role requires a minimum time commitment of monthly 1-hour meetings with Resident Doctor Peer Support. The successful candidate will also have a named educational supervisor for their clinical role, who may or may not be the same as their clinical supervisor.
There will be formal educational oversight of the role, with an induction, educational agreement, personal development plan and regular appraisals.
This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to develop and enhance their knowledge and skills and would form the perfect platform for progression to the role of Chief Registrar.
The role of the Resident Doctor Peer Support is broad in scope to allow the successful candidate and recruiting organisations to have autonomy and flexibility over the work the Resident Doctor Peer Support undertakes. It is a unique and bespoke role that we are excited to see in place, and as highlighted above would be a great platform for development into other senior leadership roles.
The Resident Doctor Peer Support should focus on addressing key local challenges and priorities, which may include some or all the following:
• Providing a ‘bridge’ between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.
• Service improvement, for example working with the Medical Director and other senior colleagues at redesigning pathways, implementing new technology and establishing new services to improve flow and outcomes for patients.
• Working with and alongside the Medical Education team in improving the quality of clinical and non-clinical education and training activities and supporting/mentoring other trainees to engage in quality improvement.
• Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and improve morale.
• Improving efficiency and reducing waste.

As detailed above, the role of the Resident Doctor Peer Support is broad in scope to allow the successful candidate and recruiting organisations to have autonomy and flexibility over the work the Resident Doctor Peer Support undertakes. It is a unique and bespoke role that we are excited to see in place, and as highlighted above would be a great platform for development into other senior leadership roles.
