Summary

15 hours per week - Part time and Permanent, term time only.Employment Start Date: Monday 2nd March 2026 (ideally with some time beforehand for an effective handover)There is a possibility that these hours could increase in the future, and additional hours during school holidays can be negotiated.
Closing date: Monday 19th January 2026 at 12 noon
Interview date: Wednesday 21st January 2026 (afternoon)
Due to the retirement of the present caretaker the Governing Body of Ysgol Abermorddu are keen to appoint a committed caretaker to provide an effective efficient on-site service, ensuring the security and safety of the buildings and surrounding areas, heating and lighting of the premises and minor maintenance work.
The successful candidate will be a committed, enthusiastic and motivated individual - able to manage the day to day running of the school site, including some repairs and maintenance. We would love to hear from you if you are an experienced caretaker or ex-tradesperson. DIY skills are desirable, as is the ability to prioritise and manage your own workload.
The school building will need to be open by 7.00am and closed from 6.00pm. Hours to be discussed and agreed.

The main duties would be (see Job Description also):
• Opening and securing the school sites at agreed times.
• Acting as a main key holder and responding to emergencies.
• Monitoring heating, lighting and water systems, checking meters, and ensuring plant rooms are safe and well maintained.
• Maintaining the tidiness and general presentation of the school buildings and surrounding areas.
• Undertaking routine maintenance, minor repairs and basic DIY tasks, within your level of competency, as agreed with the Headteacher.
• Maintaining clear, safe access routes around the school, especially during adverse weather.
• Supporting contractors on site and reporting any concerns to the Headteacher.
• Keeping basic records such as checks, logs and health and safety documentation.
The successful candidate will:
• Be reliable, flexible and capable of working independently.
• Have good practical skills for maintenance, basic repairs and general caretaking tasks.
• Take pride in keeping the school safe, clean and welcoming.
• Demonstrate good organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Be confident in following health and safety procedures.
• Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with staff, contractors and the wider school community.
Essential criteria:
• Able to work under direction and under own initiative.
• Use chemicals, tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Thoroughness and ability to work to pre-set timescales.
• Work constructively as part of a team.
• Be line manager for our cleaner(s).
Desirable criteria:
• Previous caretaking/cleaning or equivalent experience
• DIY skills
• COSHH training
• Legionella training
• Asbestos training
