Could this be the right role for you?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic Band 5 Staff Nurse to join any of our friendly haemato-oncology wards at St Georges Hospital, on a part time permanent basis. These wards care for patients with a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders and oncological conditions. The department works with a team of specialist consultants, nurses and AHPs who collectively provide a comprehensive service covering diagnosis, treatment, symptom control management, and end of life care.
The haematology-oncology department is comprised of Gordon Smith Ward (12 beds), Ruth Myles Ward (12 beds) and Trevor Howell Ward (19 beds). There is a haematology day care unit attached to Ruth Myles Ward and an Oncology Day Unit attached to Trevor Howell Ward. We also have clinical nurse specialists associated with blood cancers, solid tumours and bleeding disorders as well having a research team conducting clinical trials.
We strive to deliver the highest quality of care to all patients and always striving to put the patients first. You will need to be a registered nurse and ideally demonstrate previous Oncology/Haematology experience, evidence of the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy is desired. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are also desirable, however full training will be given.
The post holder will have excellent opportunities for professional and personal development in a well-resourced environment, with support from the unit’s haemato-oncology practice educators. We will support and encourage you to achieve your potential as a nurse.
You will need to have the ability to plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.
To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
To develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
To ensure that all nursing procedures are carried out in accordance with St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust policies taking appropriate action in emergency situations.
In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, be responsible for setting, monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of care particularly for patients with multiple needs who require complex packages of care.
Maintaining personal contact with patients, relatives and carers, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring a friendly environment at all times.
