Duration: Initially for a 6 month contract
Pay Rate: £31.71 PAYE / £41.55 Umbrella
Work Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days per week in the office

About the Client
Southwark Council’s Environment, Sustainability and Leisure division is responsible for delivering safe, efficient and sustainable transport and infrastructure services across the borough. The team plays a key role in managing traffic operations, supporting engineering projects and ensuring the smooth running of the borough’s transport network.

About the Role
Due to increased workload, Southwark Council is seeking an experienced Traffic Manager to support the Engineering & Surveying function. The post holder will contribute to the effective management of traffic operations, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and supporting the delivery of safe, efficient and sustainable transport solutions.

You will work closely with internal teams, contractors and external stakeholders to coordinate traffic management activities, review proposals and ensure that works on the network are planned and delivered with minimal disruption.

Key Responsibilities
Oversee and coordinate traffic management activities across the borough.

Review traffic management plans, engineering proposals and permit applications.

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations and council policies.

Liaise with contractors, utility companies and internal departments to manage works on the highway.

Monitor network performance and identify opportunities to improve safety and efficiency.

Provide technical advice on traffic management, road safety and network operations.

Support the delivery of engineering and surveying projects as required.

Maintain accurate records and ensure timely reporting.

Candidate Requirements
Strong background in traffic management, highways, engineering or a related field.

Knowledge of relevant legislation, including traffic orders, permitting and highway regulations.

Experience reviewing and approving traffic management plans.

Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.

Ability to analyse technical information and provide clear, practical advice.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Confident working both independently and as part of a wider team.

Proficient in relevant systems, software and Microsoft Office.
