The role:
As a Senior Appraisal Specialist, you will play a key role in developing and leading the technical appraisal of business cases for flood and coastal risk management schemes. Working across a diverse portfolio of projects and clients, you’ll provide technical leadership on project appraisals and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to shape resilient, community-focused solutions.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines and support the development of junior staff through mentoring, technical oversight and day-to-day guidance. For those looking to take the next step in their career, there are also opportunities to take on formal line management responsibilities and play a greater role in shaping the growth of the team.
Duties will include:
• Developing Strategic, Outline and Full Business Cases in line with FCERM-AG and the Green Book Five Case Model
• Leading options appraisal and contributing to early-stage concept and outline design
Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff, with opportunities to take on line management responsibilities
• Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, including hydrologists, hydraulic modellers, GIS specialists and ecologists
• Contributing to bid preparation and supporting delivery across framework agreements.

We’re looking for someone with strong technical judgement, a proactive mindset, and a genuine interest in supporting others. You’ll be confident working independently, comfortable sharing your knowledge, and keen to contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team.
This role would suit someone ready to take a leading role in project delivery, while also playing a part in helping others thrive.
A Degree (or equivalent) in a Civil Engineering, Earth or Environmental Sciences, Geography or a related field.is required together with Chartership (or working towards chartership) with a recognised professional body (e.g. CIWEM, ICE)
Essential attributes for the role:
• Proven experience in flood and coastal risk, or related management in consultancy or client settings
• Understanding of business cases and their appraisal, including familiarity with FCERM-AG and HM Treasury Green Book
• A collaborative approach to working across teams and disciplines
• Self-motivation, initiative, and strong organisational skills to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work
• A genuine interest in supporting the development of others and contributing to team growth
• Strong report writing and effective communication skills.
Desirable attributes for the role:
• An appreciation of engineering principles and a broad knowledge base spanning technical and environmental disciplines
• Contract administration and client liaison, particularly in a project delivery context
• Familiarity with the Multi-Coloured Manual and economic appraisal in FCERM
• Understanding of hydraulic modelling outputs and how they inform business case development
• Use of GIS-based data management and analysis tools
• Confident use of Office 365, including SharePoint and Teams.
