Summary
Working in collaboration with the individual, the team and significant others to empower and support the recovery of people who are experiencing an acute or crisis episode of mental ill health, requiring an inpatient stay.

Understand their difficulties, abilities and needs
Optimise their health, ability and experience
Support their discharge and ongoing recovery
Undertake both holistic and specific (e.g. functional, sensory) occupational assessment of physical and mental health and wellbeing needs.
Plan, deliver and evaluate effective and evidenced based occupational therapy interventions.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of the therapeutic ward community and environment, embracing current clinical initiatives i.e. Sensory Friendly, Trauma Informed practices.
Establish relationships and collaborate with the range of parties engaged in the person's care, in response to their needs e.g. MDT, EBEs, carers, range of community services.
Supervise and contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of therapeutic ward activities.

1. Goal setting and interventions to improve engagement in self care,
productivity (i.e. self care) & leisure (e.g. exercise, hobbies) activities for treatment of acute mental health needs. Including:
o Building self efficacy to engage
o Exploring options for activity
o Rapport building & graded engagement

• Optimising required self care / independent living skills
o Education regarding management of symptoms and risk, within activity
o (Re) Establishing productive / valued routines
o Developing / maintaining organisation and problem solving within activity
o Developing / maintaining communication & interaction skills within activity
o Use of aids, adaptations and environmental modification to support engagement in activity
o Supporting transitions into new physical and social environments
o Consultation, liaison and advice
o Supporting engagement in leisure & exercise
o Vocational guidance, signposting and advice as applicable
o Identifying use of occupation for risk, symptom management and relapse prevention.
o Liaise with care coordinator & wider MDT team to integrate occupational intervention plan with CPA care plan.

1. Ensure occupational therapy makes a significant and specialist contribution to patient’s recovery and pathway through the PICU and inpatient service.
1. To contribute to the maintenance and development of the therapeutic experience and environment within PICU and inpatient settings.
1. To provide professional leadership, supervision and guidance to identified junior staff (occupational therapy, AHP, activity staff) and students.
1. To be responsible for managing high standards of clinical care and maintaining service delivery based on sound clinical and professional judgement.
