Summary
Are you a creative programme-maker who takes pride in hunting down fresh, unexpected stories and turning them into exciting, contemporary STEM experiences? Do you thrive leading multidisciplinary teams and partners through complex projects, bringing innovative ideas to life with clarity, collaboration and impact?
About us
At Science Museum Group (SMG) we are here to inspire futures. Our vision is to 'think big' in the delivery of bold creative galleries and programmes, sharing authentic stories in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The Science Museum (SM), part of the SMG, aims to inspire visitors with award-winning exhibitions, galleries, iconic objects and stories to record scientific, technological and medical advancement from across the globe.
SMG has a long and rich history of developing world leading interactive galleries. With Wonderlab opening at the Science Museum in 2016, the Group has spearheaded a step-change in how science is communicated in an interactive environment. We have grown the number of interactive galleries across our museums, applying the same rigorous process of development for Wonderlab at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford and the National Railway Museum in York. These galleries have unique characteristics but are underpinned by the same strategy and approach.
Space is a key focus for the Science Museum, showcased with the opening of the Space Gallery in September 2025. To build upon this celebration of space, we plan to expand our early years offer with a new interactive gallery for our youngest visitors, which will focus on space and Mathematics.
About the role
As the Interpretation & Content Developer, you will support the creative content and interactive development for this new gallery and play a key role within the Public Programme team, working in a visitor focused way and building science capital amongst audiences. You will focus on developing and delivering compelling interactives and interpretation for the gallery, compiling design and exhibit briefs, building content around the key theme of Mathematics. Your primary focus will be on the mathematics STEM topic, introducing it to visitors, while utilising creativity and innovative techniques to enhance their overall experience.
Working with the wider museum team, you will seek opportunities to support the development of an open for all audience centred gallery engagement programme, for schools and families.
This role is a fixed term contract until November 2027, advertised for 35 hours per week working Monday to Friday and you will be based at the Science Museum in London.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who are interested in turning big, complex ideas into clear, compelling stories that delight and engage diverse audiences. You'll bring effective narrative and communication skills, with the ability to quickly distil information, shape creative concepts and craft content that is accessible, relevant and imaginative.
We're particularly interested in people who understand Early Years audiences - their developmental needs, motivations and interests - and who can help design playful, interactive experiences grounded in research and real audience insight. You'll enjoy working collaboratively with a variety of specialists, from designers and artists to STEM experts, skillfully leveraging their knowledge to develop rich, meaningful content. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organised and thrives in a busy project environment, balancing independent ownership with effective teamwork.
Above all, you'll be engaged, reflective and committed to contributing to an open, inclusive organisation where creativity, curiosity and learning are at the heart of everything we do.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
