We are seeking a reliable and motivated Chargehand to support frontline Environmental Services operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising staff, operating council vehicles, and ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard while complying with all Health & Safety and Council policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support team members, providing on-the-job training and mentoring
- Ensure scheduled routes and work programmes are completed to required standards
- Operate and drive council vehicles safely, including refuse, recycling, cleansing, or grounds maintenance vehicles (depending on role)
- Adapt daily work routines to manage road closures, traffic, weather conditions, and workload changes
- Act as the main point of contact between the team, supervisors, and management
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, identifying and reporting issues where necessary
- Liaise with client officers and attend inspections or meetings as required
- Provide a courteous and professional service to residents, customers, and road users
- Assist with resolving complaints sensitively and report issues affecting service delivery
- Monitor attendance, PPE compliance, and maintain accurate records and timesheets
- Complete all required paperwork including incident reports, vehicle checks, and waste documentation
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations and report any defects, incidents, or hazards
- Uphold professional standards and represent the Council positively at all times
Essential Requirements
- Full driving licence in the relevant class for the role
- Experience in supervising staff or leading teams
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety procedures
- Good communication and customer care skills
- Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing workloads
