Summary
Purpose of the role The Occupational Health Nurse Advisor will provide autonomous case management for a designated caseload of clients, ensuring confidentiality, equality, and diversity in all interactions. The role involves delivering specialist advice on health promotion, sickness absence management, and advisory services while working as part of a small Occupational Health team. The post holder will be responsible for Occupational Health screening, immunisations, and venepuncture. The role requires up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based best practices in Occupational Health and Wellbeing, in line with current guidelines and legislation. A key part of the role will include screening pre-employment health questionnaires to assess the fitness of new employees for their roles within primary care, identify any necessary workplace adjustments, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Key working relationships Provide an Occupational Health service primarily for employees within the primary care sector within Cornwall. Work autonomously with a caseload of employees, referring to senior colleagues as needed. Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including practice managers & employees. Key result areas Clinical and professional responsibilities Maintain valid and up-to-date registration with the NMC and comply with NMC guidance on revalidation, clinical supervision, and professional issues. Screen pre-employment health questionnaires to assess the fitness of new employees for their roles, identify any necessary adjustments, and provide recommendations to management. Provide effective sickness absence management advice, including case management services for managers and staff, in accordance with best practice, local, and national policies e.g., Equality Act. Plan, coordinate, and deliver screening and immunization clinics in line with Department of Health guidance and local policy. Assess staff following contamination or exposure incidents e.g., bloodborne virus exposure, conduct risk assessments, and ensure complete documentation and reporting e.g., RIDDOR. Maintain high standards of record-keeping and service delivery. Work within data protection policies and ensure confidentiality in all interactions. Communication and relationship skills Ensure all communication, including complex, contentious, or sensitive discussions is conducted in a responsive, inclusive, and constructive manner. Adapt communication styles to respect equality and diversity, considering potential barriers e.g., language, culture, physical or mental conditions. Build and maintain good working relationships with managers, staff, and external stakeholders. Provide comprehensive written reports in response to queries from employees, management, and HR. Liaise with HR and management regarding employee health issues and sickness absence trends. Analytical and judgment skills Provide continuity of care for clients throughout their contact with the Occupational Health service. Interpret questionnaire feedback and plan appropriate onward care. Recognise personal limitations and seek advice or referral from senior staff when necessary. Concentrate for extended periods, weigh up information, and provide evidence-based advice in line with best practice and policy. Planning and organisational skills Balance high-volume pre-booked appointments, clinics with service development work, health surveillance programs, and urgent enquiries. Ensure sufficient supplies of clinical materials, and health promotion resources. Maintain an updated diary and record appointments and outcomes on the OH computer system. Manage non-complex individual referrals, including planning, implementing, and evaluating advice. Physical skills Work independently, including lone working at various locations. Transport equipment and vaccines to remote clinics. Perform clinical procedures requiring dexterity and accuracy e.g. vaccinations, venepuncture. Attend team, local, and national meetings, training events as required. Responsibility for patient and client care Provide direct client contact for specialist Occupational Health activities. Offer specialist advice to staff and managers regarding sickness absence, ill health, and workplace adjustments. Ensure all advice and reports comply with best practice, Equality Act, and local, national policies. Respect confidentiality, equality, and diversity in all interactions. Responsibility for policy and service development Assist in monitoring, reviewing, and developing Occupational Health policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current legislation and best practice. Responsibility for financial and physical resources Order and maintain clinical stock and supplies, ensuring safe storage, preparation, and administration of vaccines. Ensure the safe use and maintenance of clinical equipment. Responsibility for Human Resources Take personal responsibility for professional development. Attend mandatory and statutory training. Responsibility for information resources Use computers and IT systems to enter and retrieve information, with advanced keyboard skills for Microsoft Office and other relevant software. Decision-making Make clinical decisions based on available evidence and best practice. Respect confidentiality and seek advice when necessary. Mental and emotional effort Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in difficult situations. Respond appropriately to distressed, anxious, or upset clients. Working conditions Work in various locations, including clinical and office environments. Potential exposure to body fluids, medical sharps, and infectious diseases. Daily use of DSE Display Screen Equipment. Occasional travel across sites to deliver services.
