Summary
Job Description The Band 5 Staff Nurse will be responsible for delivering high standards of nursing care to patients admitted to the Acute Stroke Unit, ensuring care is safe, effective, and patient-centred. The post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with acute stroke and complex neurological needs. The role involves providing care across the stroke pathway, from hyperacute and acute management through to early rehabilitation and discharge planning. Following completion of appropriate training and agreed clinical competencies, the post holder will have the opportunity to work within the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU). The post holder will be expected to contribute to maintaining a positive ward culture that reflects Trust values, supports colleagues, and promotes dignity, compassion, and respect for all patients and visitors. Main Duties and Responsibilities Please note: Following completion of relevant training and agreed clinical competencies, there will be opportunities to work within the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU). Deliver safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to patients admitted with acute stroke and related conditions Undertake comprehensive patient assessments, care planning, implementation, and evaluation Monitor neurological observations and respond promptly to changes in patient condition Administer medications safely in line with trust policies Support patients and families through education, reassurance, and involvement in care decisions Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to support rehabilitation and discharge planning Maintain accurate, timely, and professional clinical documentation Contribute to service improvement, audit, and quality initiatives Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times Person Specification Essential Criteria: Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration (or pending registration) Demonstrates a caring, patient-centred approach Good communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively as part of a team Willingness to learn and develop clinical skills in stroke care Desirable Criteria: Previous experience in acute medicine, neurology, or stroke care Knowledge of stroke pathways and evidence-based practice Experience of working in a fast-paced acute environment
