Summary

The successful candidate will deliver care through a combination of face-to-face and virtual clinics, ensuring services remain accessible, responsive, and patient-centred. A key component of the role is participation in our nationally commissioned specialist services, including the severe Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Hypophosphatasia clinics, working alongside two consultant colleagues to provide expert management for children with complex metabolic bone disorders. The post holder will also contribute to the care of patients with rare endocrine conditions including rare tumours and CHARGE syndrome clinics and participate in general endocrine and transition clinics to support seamless, age-appropriate care. As an integral part of the multidisciplinary diabetes team, you will contribute to MDT meetings and collaborative management of children and young people with metabolic bone disease, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The role also includes delivering outreach clinics for both metabolic bone disease within the supra-regional service and for peripheral endocrine outreach, extending specialist expertise across the network. Working closely with colleagues, you will help foster innovation and maintain excellence across all aspects of endocrine and diabetes care. This post offers an exceptional opportunity for a motivated clinician to join a progressive, well-respected team known for its strong clinical standards, commitment to teaching, and ongoing service development.The post comprises 8.0 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PAs and 2.0 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). We are seeking a dedicated, tertiary-trained paediatric endocrinologist to complement and strengthen the existing team. The on-call commitment is 1:6.5 for endocrinology and diabetes. On-call arrangementsThere is a 1-in-6.5 WTE on call commitment attached to this post, covering all clinical aspects of diabetes and endocrinology on tertiary level, including inpatient endocrine and diabetes ward rounds when on-call at weekends. On-call tertiary endocrinology support is also provided to the regional DGH services. On call is re-numerated with category A, supplement included in DCC PA commitment. On-call cover for Diabetes Home Care (outpatient) is provided by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses, and occasionally, to cover holidays and sickness, by the consultants.TeachingThe post holder will be expected to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and the training of other relevant staff groups. This includes the mentoring and educational supervision of postgraduate medical staff. The Trust is a major contributor to the teaching programme of the University of Birmingham Medical School and Aston Medical School and has close ties with the Health Care Faculty at the University of Central England, Aston and Birmingham City University.ResearchThe post holder will be expected to support and facilitate clinical research within the Endocrinology and Diabetes department, with a particular emphasis on advancing research objectives in endocrinology, metabolic bone disease, diabetes, and rare forms of diabetes. Research is a key strength of the department, and the successful applicant is encouraged to actively participate in research activities and contribute to patient recruitment for the departments ongoing clinical trials and portfolio studies.Clinical GovernanceThe appointee will be expected to actively engage in all elements of the Trusts Clinical Governance framework, which is designed to monitor, maintain, and enhance the quality and effectiveness of patient care. The Trust is committed to supporting the professional development of medical staff through regular individual appraisal. This will include auditing personal clinical practice, contributing to departmental and specialty reviews, and maintaining a focus on continuing professional development (CPD). The appointee is also expected to meet the Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements as set by the relevant Royal College, with appropriate study leave and funding available in accordance with the Trusts study leave policy. A strong awareness of professional standards, safe and ethical clinical practice, and a prompt response to situations that may pose increased clinical risk or lead to adverse outcomes are essential components of the role.
