We help our clients safeguard the water supply, improve environmental performance and manage demand for future generations. We enhance and extend asset life, ensuring compliance with water quality and environmental standards. We’re problem solvers with over 140 years of combined experience in engineering and infrastructure.
This role will be within our MEICA and capital maintenance team. Our Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation (MEICA) experts offer a one-stop solution, including ongoing operation and maintenance services.

What will you be doing?
As our Design Manager you'll have the opportunity to:
- Design Leadership and Management: Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary in-house or external design teams (including civil, MEICA, process, and geotechnical engineers) to ensure projects are produced on time, within budget, and to the correct specifications.
- Technical Compliance and Quality Assurance: Ensure all designs comply with technical standards, client requirements, and relevant UK legislation, including the CDM 2015 Regulations (Construction Design and Management).
- Design Processes and Procedures: Working with Leadership to ensure that the correct processes and procedures are in place to provide design teams with the right tools to delivery right first-time designs.
- Project and Financial Management: Work closely with Delivery teams to plan the technical deliverables, manage design schedules, control change, mitigate risks, and oversee resourcing and forecasting related to the design.
- Stakeholder and Client Engagement: Manage client expectations, lead stakeholder engagement, and act as the primary technical interface, ensuring operational requirements are embedded in the design process.
- Innovation and Sustainability: Drive a culture of innovation, championing sustainable development, and identifying cost-effective, low-carbon solutions that minimise environmental impact.
- Mentoring and Development: Provide technical and pastoral mentoring to junior staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment for professional growth.
- Health and Safety: Embrace the importance of Health & Safety in all circumstances, ensuring risks are minimised during the design process and clearly communicated for the construction phase.
What you’ll bring
- A degree (or equivalent) in an engineering or scientific discipline (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Engineering).
- Significant experience in design and management within the water or a related infrastructure sector.
- Proven track record of project leadership and successful delivery of complex, multidisciplinary projects.
- In-depth knowledge of UK Health and Safety and design regulations, particularly CDM 2015.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage and motivate diverse teams.
- Commercially astute with experience in managing project finances, risks, and change control.
- Experience of working within a joint venture or alliance environment.
