Job Description Job Title: Phlebotomist Reports to: Lead Nurse & Operations Manager Location: Highworth Surgery Hours: 15 hours per week Job Purpose The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining highquality blood samples from patients using venepuncture techniques, ensuring safe handling, accurate labelling, and timely transportation to the laboratory. The role supports clinical teams by contributing to effective patient care, maintaining infection prevention standards, and delivering a positive patient experience. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties Perform venepuncture on adults (and children if trained) following clinical guidelines. Ensure correct patient identification, specimen labelling, and completion of request forms. Prepare and store blood samples according to laboratory requirements. Follow infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, including use of PPE and safe disposal of sharps. Avoids and manages complications such as difficult veins, fainting, or unexpected reactions. Maintain accurate clinical records within the electronic patient record Assist with the collection of other specimens (e.g., urine, swabs) if required. Ensure safe handling of blood and bodily fluids in line with organisational policy. Patient Care Provide reassurance and support to anxious or vulnerable patients. Communicate clearly and professionally, explaining procedures and gaining consent. Treat all patients with dignity, respect, and confidentiality. Operational Responsibilities Maintain clinical areas, stock levels, and equipment (e.g., tourniquets, vacutainers). Report faults or shortages promptly. Adhere to all health and safety policies, including COSHH and sharps policies. Work effectively with the wider healthcare team to support smooth clinic flow. Professional Requirements Maintain professional boundaries and attitudes at all times. Participate in mandatory training (e.g., Basic Life Support, IPC). Engage in continuing professional development (CPD). Follow safeguarding procedures and escalate concerns appropriately. Health, safety and security Use the personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines. Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks. Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards. Reporting of any potential risks identified, including: Hand washing Universal hygiene procedures Collection and handling of laboratory specimens Segregation and disposal of waste materials Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control Measures Confidentiality: In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters.
