Electrical Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) | Edinburgh | £45,000 – £60,000 Design the power systems accelerating the clean energy transition.
At StorTera, we design and deliver advanced commercial-scale battery energy storage and ultra-rapid EV charging solutions that help stabilise the grid, unlock renewable generation, and decarbonise energy-intensive operations.
As we scale our project portfolio, we’re looking for an Electrical Engineer to play a key role in taking our BESS projects from concept to commissioning — shaping real infrastructure that will power the future.
If you thrive on complex electrical systems, grid-connected assets, and seeing your designs come to life in the field, this is your opportunity to make a tangible impact.
The Role:
You’ll be a core technical contributor across the full project lifecycle, leading the electrical design and delivery of commercial and utility-scale battery energy storage and EV charging projects.
Working closely with software, mechanical, civil, and project teams, you’ll ensure StorTera’s systems are safe, compliant, efficient, and grid-ready — from initial design through to commissioning and operational support.
This is a hands-on role with real ownership, visibility, and technical depth.
Key Responsibilities of the Electrical Engineer:
• Design electrical systems for commercial BESS and ultra-rapid EV charging projects, including single-line diagrams, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and equipment specifications (inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, batteries)
• Perform power system studies, including short-circuit, load flow, and protection coordination analysis
• Ensure compliance with relevant national and international electrical codes and standards (IEEE, IEC, UL, etc.)
• Collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, mechanical and civil engineers, software developers, and commercial teams
• Develop technical specifications and bid packages for electrical equipment and services
• Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations, providing expert guidance and troubleshooting
• Conduct site assessments and resolve project-specific electrical challenges
• Engage with clients, presenting technical solutions and responding to complex requirements
• Continuously improve engineering processes, tools, and best practices
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a strong engineering culture
What We’re Looking For:
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar accredited discipline
• Experience delivering commercial or utility-scale energy storage, solar PV, EV charging, or power generation projects
• Strong knowledge of power electronics, battery technologies (Li-ion preferred), and grid interconnection requirements
• Proficiency with electrical design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, PSS/E, or PSCAD
• Hands-on experience with key standards including IEEE 1547 and UL 9540
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to engineering quality
• Confident communicator who works well with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• A values-driven engineer with a clear commitment to safety, sustainability, and societal impact
Developing engineers encouraged: We’re happy to consider candidates with less than 5 years’ experience. If you have strong fundamentals and ambition, we’ll provide structured training and mentoring, with a remuneration package aligned to your development pathway.
Why StorTera?
• Work on cutting-edge energy storage and EV infrastructure shaping the future of clean power
• Take ownership of real, grid-connected projects from design to delivery
• Join a collaborative, innovative team that values expertise, learning, and initiative
• Competitive salary (£45k–£60k DOE), benefits, and clear career progression
• Be part of a company making a measurable difference to the energy system
