The Role
We are recruiting one Communications Officer to support the Strategic Communication Manager in delivering council-wide communications and marketing initiatives. This temporary role is part of a one-off project and offers flexible working, with on-site attendance required only for specific meetings or events.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior officers, elected members, and partner organisations to manage media relations, deliver campaigns, and ensure the council’s corporate identity and values are consistently reflected in all communications.

Key Responsibilities
Prepare proactive and reactive statements to promote council services, activities, and events.

Maintain strong relationships with local and national media to protect and enhance the council’s reputation.

Respond to media enquiries in a timely and transparent manner.

Generate news content, social media posts, features, and editorial activity.

Support Cabinet Member briefings and liaise with the Strategic Communication Manager on outcomes.

Operate the council’s social media accounts and coordinate public messaging with partner organisations.

Provide communications and event delivery support for key council duties.

Develop campaign materials for residents, businesses, and stakeholders using PR, social media, website content, and marketing collateral.

Work with the Destination Development team on communication planning and delivery.

Brief the graphics team to support creative development in line with communication plans.

Candidate Requirements
Undergraduate degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline, or significant experience in a similar role.

Understanding of the role and challenges of local government.

Working knowledge of media and newsgathering approaches.

Experience in communications, media, or publishing.

Proven ability to work with managers on communication and media projects.

Strong skills in interpreting and explaining complex issues clearly for varied audiences.

Ability to produce high-quality work under pressure, particularly in reputation-sensitive situations.

Excellent copywriting skills across multiple platforms and audiences.

Evidence of strong relationship-building skills.
