Job Vacancy: Behaviour Specialist / PBS Practitioner (Positive Behaviour Support) — Professional Consultant

Location (on-site): 6 Dyas Road, Great Barr, Birmingham, B44 8SF
Time commitment: 2 hours per week (1 on-site visit weekly, typically term-time)
Engagement: Consultancy / Professional Services (self-employed or PAYE by agreement)
Pay: Competitive hourly rate above National Minimum Wage, commensurate with experience and qualifications
Role Overview
BCI is seeking an experienced Behaviour Specialist / PBS Practitioner to support post-16 learners with SEND through evidence-based Positive Behaviour Support. You will work on-site to help reduce behaviours of concern, strengthen proactive supports, improve engagement, and coach staff to deliver consistent, person-centred practice.

Key Responsibilities
• Complete PBS-informed assessment and formulation, including functional understanding of behaviour and unmet needs.
• Develop, implement and review Behaviour Support Plans and practical strategies that are clear, measurable, and easy for staff to apply.
• Coach and upskill staff through modelling, observation, feedback, and reflective practice.
• Recommend reasonable adjustments and proactive environmental adaptations (sensory, communication, routine, curriculum access).
• Provide guidance on de-escalation and safer working approaches in line with BCI policies.
• Contribute to multi-agency working and provide concise written visit summaries and recommendations.
• Maintain accurate records and treat all information confidentially.
• Follow safeguarding procedures and escalate concerns immediately via BCI’s safeguarding routes.

Essential Requirements
• Recognised, current PBS/behaviour qualification or training and a provable work history delivering PBS/behaviour support.
• Demonstrable experience with post-16 SEND learners (education, specialist provision, or closely related settings).
• Strong knowledge of person-centred, least restrictive, trauma-informed, and needs-led approaches.
• Excellent communication and professional boundaries; confident working in a college environment.
• Ability to attend the Birmingham site weekly and work independently and reliably.

• Experience supporting autism, learning disabilities, complex SEMH, anxiety-based school/college avoidance, and communication needs.
• Experience delivering staff CPD or structured coaching programmes.
• Ability to use data and simple monitoring tools to evidence impact over time.

Safer Recruitment & Mandatory Compliance (Education Setting)
Appointment will be subject to appropriate checks and clearances consistent with working in a post-16 SEND environment, including:
• Enhanced DBS (and Children’s Barred List check where the duties meet the definition of regulated activity).
• Right to Work in the UK verification.
• Verification of identity, qualifications, and professional training.
• Review of employment/professional history and any relevant gaps.
• References: typically two professional references and one character reference.
• Completion of safeguarding induction and any mandatory training required for working in an education setting (including Prevent awareness where applicable).
• Agreement to comply with BCI policies including safeguarding, confidentiality, information governance/data protection, professional conduct and boundaries.
If you are operating as an independent consultant/business, you will also be expected to provide:
• Evidence of professional indemnity and public liability insurance (levels agreed during onboarding).
• A signed service agreement covering confidentiality, data handling, reporting lines, safeguarding escalation, and deliverables.
