Summary

We are looking for a Consultant Obstetrician and subspecialist in Fetal-Maternal Medicine to join our team of Consultants in Women’s Health at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, Bristol. Due to recent national appointments, we have created a need for another Consultant Obstetrician and sub-specialist in Fetal-Maternal Medicine to join our growing team and to support our core business.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team when we are developing and expanding services offering high quality care to our women in all parts of our service.

The post holder will hold CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and sub-specialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine or be within 6 months of this. They may have additional experience in other specialist areas to meet the needs of the department.

Our fetal medicine team are based in our newly-refurbished dedicated Fetal Medicine Unit with a dedicated waiting area, scanning and counselling rooms and a highly competent core Fetal Medicine Midwifery and administration team. We provide a broad spectrum of fetal care, including all non-fetoscopic invasive procedures. We particularly provide care for babies at risk of extreme pre-term birth and we diagnose and lead, as part of the MDT, care for all women across the South West with placenta accreta spectrum disorder.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest Trusts in the country. Last year the Trust treated over 100,000 inpatients, over 350,000 outpatients, 90,000 emergency department patients and helped deliver nearly 6,000 babies. It employs more than 9,500 staff, has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million. We have specialist and tertiary level services in urogynaecology, endometriosis, fertility, vulval clinics, abortion and placenta accreta spectrum disorder. NBT has a level 3 NICU and is the host for the South West Maternal Medicine, Placenta Accreta and Complex Abortion Networks.

The Trust provides medical, surgical, neonatal and maternity care for its local population of approximately a million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The Trust also provides regional services in neurosciences, orthopaedics, pathology, plastic surgery and burns, renal medicine and transplant and urology and is the major trauma centre for the West Country.

North Bristol NHS Trust values all people as individuals. We aim to be an anti-discriminatory organisation and are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We welcome applicants from all underrepresented groups.

The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the post holder is absent. The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme.

The post is based at Southmead Hospital. The appointee will be required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from base hospital, for on-call purposes.

Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidates will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.
