We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

As Housing Access and Sustainment Advisor (PRS), you will help to remove the barriers often faced by residents and open up access to the local Private Rented Sector (PRS), providing financial incentives alongside tailored advice and support. You will play a key role in promoting and delivering the Council’s Deposit Assistance Scheme, and new Tenant Matching Service, as you process and approve applications, issue new bonds, make up-front payments and ‘match’ prospective tenants with available homes, working in many cases to prevent or alleviate homelessness.

This is a diverse, rewarding role, as you work to incentivise local landlords and agents and build up trust, whilst supporting a range of cohorts from individuals and families residing in unsuitable temporary accommodation, to our local Care Leavers to access affordable, secure, and quality accommodation in the PRS. You will also assist private tenants on a broad range of tenancy matters to aid the general sustainment of tenancies, such as tenant rights and responsibilities, tenancy deposit disputes, and landlord harassment and illegal eviction.

About you:

You will have 5 GCSE’s Grade C or above (or 4 to 9) to include Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications. You will have experience of working with customers including private landlords and letting agents - in a front-line capacity, with a good knowledge of the Private Rented Sector, relevant legislation and the current challenges in relation to housing demand. Possessing excellent interpersonal skills, you are able to quickly build a rapport and establish relationships with a range of partners, exerting your influence and negotiating where necessary to achieve the best outcomes for our residents. Strong administration and organisational skills are also essential to this role, with a keen eye for detail.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

This is an exciting role in Housing Services within the Strategic and Private Sector Housing Team. We are passionate about improving access to quality, affordable housing (regardless of tenure) and tackling housing inequalities, and want to ensure that all our residents have a home that is safe, secure and suitable for their needs, within a truly equitable housing sector. You can expect opportunities for development, training and innovation within a welcoming, flexible and supportive housing team, with strong links and partnerships with a range of Council departments and external agencies.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
