The successful candidate will take responsibility for the strategic coordination of SEND, working closely with the school's Deputy SENCo, leadership team, teaching staff and external professionals. With regular access to Speech and Language Therapy and a strong range of intervention programmes already in place, this is an excellent opportunity to guide effective practice and strengthen outcomes for pupils with SEND.
You will lead the SEND agenda across the school, ensuring that provision is appropriately planned, delivered and reviewed in line with statutory guidance. This includes maintaining up-to-date records, overseeing referrals, shaping EHCP processes, supporting class teachers with effective classroom strategies, and promoting a whole-school commitment to inclusive practice. This role also involves working directly with families, external agencies and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure every pupil receives coordinated, personalised support.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership for SEND across the primary phase, ensuring policy, practice and provision reflect current legislation and best practice.
• Lead the identification, assessment and monitoring of pupils with SEND, with particular emphasis on communication and interaction needs.
• Oversee and contribute to the development of pupil support plans, provision maps and EHCP processes.
Work closely with the Deputy SENCo to evaluate existing interventions and ensure they remain effective and appropriate.
Collaborate with teachers to embed inclusive teaching strategies and support differentiation in the classroom.
Liaise regularly with Speech and Language Therapists and other external specialists to coordinate intervention pathways.
Provide support, guidance and professional development opportunities for staff to strengthen whole-school SEND understanding.
Build strong relationships with parents and carers, ensuring regular communication and involvement in decision-making.
Maintain accurate records, monitor progress data and contribute to school improvement priorities related to SEND.
Ensure that SEND provision is aligned with safeguarding, well-being and pastoral support frameworks.
Essential Criteria
• NASENCo qualification (mandatory)
• Experience working within primary education
• Strong understanding of SEND legislation, the SEND Code of Practice and statutory obligations
• Experience managing or contributing to EHCP processes
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with professionals, families and school staff
• Commitment to inclusive education and improving outcomes for pupils with diverse needs
Desirable Criteria
• Experience mentoring or managing support staff, including Assistant SENCo roles
• Experience coordinating communication and interaction provision
• Background working with external specialists such as SALT, EPs or behaviour teams
• Experience within a Trust or multi-school structure
Working Pattern
• 5 days per week preferred
• 3 or 4 days will be considered
• Term-time role aligned with the school's operational calendar
Benefits
• Competitive weekly/daily rate depending on experience
• Holiday pay included
• Statutory sick pay
• Pension contributions (umbrella or PAYE depending on arrangement)
• Access to ongoing professional development
• Support from an established leadership team, Deputy SENCo, and specialist SEND professionals
• Opportunity to influence SEND strategy and practice across a well-resourced primary school
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced SENCo to make a significant impact within a thriving school community.
We welcome applications from experienced SENCos who are committed to transforming outcomes for children with additional needs.
