We are looking for a compassionate and committed Refuge Worker to join our Haringey refuge service, supporting women who have experienced domestic abuse. This role is central to ensuring the refuge is a safe, supportive and well-managed environment where women can begin their recovery journey.
You will provide practical and emotional support to residents, work collaboratively to develop personalised support and safety plans, and help ensure the day-to-day running of the refuge operates smoothly. This includes managing admissions, supporting residents with housing and welfare issues, liaising with partner agencies, and responding appropriately to crisis situations.
- Prepare and manage rooms for families moving into the refuge
- Support new residents through the admission process and initial paperwork, including welfare benefits
- Carry out risk and needs assessments, develop and regularly review support and safety plans
- Provide one-to-one keywork support to survivors of domestic abuse
- Empower residents to participate in house meetings and decision-making
- Collect rent, service charges and manage petty cash in line with procedures
- Organise repairs and contribute to the overall smooth running of the refuge
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with statutory and voluntary agencies
- Ensure residents are aware of internal and external support services available to them
You will be someone who is values-led, non-judgemental and committed to supporting women experiencing violence and abuse. You will work in a trauma-informed way, placing survivors at the centre of all decision-making.
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience working with vulnerable people, particularly women affected by domestic or sexual violence
- A strong understanding of domestic abuse and its impact on women and children
- Experience of working in a regulated environment with risk management and casework processes
- Knowledge of safeguarding for adults and children
- An understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries
- The ability to manage a varied workload, meet deadlines and maintain accurate records
- A collaborative approach and confidence working with partner agencies
- A feminist understanding of Violence Against Women and Girls
- Commitment to equality, diversity and anti-discriminatory practice
- Flexible, reflective and open to learning and continuous improvement
- A team-focused approach with an emphasis on self-care and mutual support
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in women's lives while working within a supportive, values-driven team. You will play a vital role in helping women rebuild safety, stability and independence.
