Summary

There is consultant presence in the department between the hours of 8am and midnight seven days a week. Outside of these hours supervision is provided by our tier of experienced middle grade doctors, including senior clinical fellows, with on-call consultant cover. All senior clinical fellows are allocated a named consultant supervisor who will support any educational and pastoral needs; senior support and guidance is easily accessible within the department. Whiston Emergency Department runs a regular simulation programme covering a wide range of paediatric and adult emergency cases; this multidisciplinary programme encourages inter-specialty learning and has proven beneficial for all levels of staff. There are dedicated weekly ED senior educational meetings and journal clubs in addition to regular audit, governance and mortality meetings. We have two dedicated ED Consultant Clinical Educators who support medical staff in their training and development.
