About Us
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team of over 1,400 employees and over 28,000 volunteers, united by our goal of saving lives through essential first aid services, training and campaigning. As a charity with rich heritage and a long history of serving humanity, we are proud of our past and excited about creating a healthier, safer, more resilient future.
St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, and Young Responders programmes).
Job Summary
As a key member of our Integrated Assurance and Internal Audit team, you will lead the development and delivery of St John Ambulance’s Integrated Assurance function.
In this pivotal role, you’ll shape and embed an assurance framework that enables Trustees and Executive leaders to confidently prioritise decisions, understand the charity’s key risks, and ensure there is robust assurance to demonstrate strong governance and stewardship.
You will take the lead in producing high-quality reports that support the Executive Leadership Team in managing organisational risks. Drawing on insights from our risk management framework and the charity’s four lines of assurance, your work will provide clear, evidence-based intelligence to help senior leaders make informed, strategic decisions. You will also present assurance reports to Trustees via relevant committees as part of the Board Assurance Framework.
You will oversee the organisation’s core assurance framework, including our assurance, policy, and complaints and feedback frameworks, building strong relationships across all lines of assurance. With St John operating across a diverse regulatory and operational landscape, you will play a vital role in ensuring the charity fully understands and effectively manages its risks, seeking and scrutinising assurance from across the organisation.
A key element of this role is your ability to synthesise complex information from multiple departments, distil key themes, and translate this into clear recommendations for senior decision-makers.
About You
GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths & English, Grade C/4 or equivalent is essential. Ideally you will hold a relevant professional qualification (e.g., CCAB, CIA, CFE, ACFS, CRMA).
Demonstrable experience leading teams within internal controls, assurance, or risk management
Strong ability to work autonomously, delivering high-quality outputs while navigating multiple stakeholders and influencing senior leaders.
Proven experience managing assurance-related frameworks, including complaints and feedback processes, and enabling other teams to meet internal frameworks and standards.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and experience working with external regulators (e.g., CQC, Charity Commission, ICO, Fundraising Regulator), ideally within a charity environment.
About the Role
Lead the development and embedding of key organisational frameworks, including assurance, risk, and policy frameworks, ensuring they are robust, consistent, and effectively adopted across the charity.
Produce high-quality integrated assurance reports for the Executive Leadership Team and the Risk & Assurance Committee, clearly analysing assurance sources and their implications for risk management.
Act as a key partner to senior leaders, providing support and constructive challenge on risk management practices and the adequacy of assurance within the four lines of assurance.
Drive the charity’s risk management approach, ensuring risk appetite is set by Trustees and operationalised by Directors and Heads of Service, facilitating high-quality risk discussions across leadership networks.
Oversee an effective, regulation compliant complaints and feedback system and ensure the policy framework is well-governed, timely, high-quality, and effectively communicated to all St John people.
