An exciting opportunity has opened at The Christie for a Consultant in Acute Oncology and Upper GI.
The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input within the Upper Gi outpatient clinics involving chemotherapy delivery, to supervise patients receiving chemotherapy and to conduct ward rounds to provide optimum care to patients to be delivered over 3PAs.
The applicant will deliver 7 PAs of Acute Oncology care to inpatients on the Acute Assessment Unit and Medical Oncology wards. The Trust provides an inpatient service for selected non-elective admissions where the reason for admission is primarily related to the patient’s underlying malignant diagnosis or its treatment. All admissions are already in receipt of oncology care at the Trust. The normal route of admission is via our 24hr hotline which triages patients.
This is a split role with 7PAs towards Acute Oncology cover in the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and Medical Oncology wards and 3PAs to provide senior input in the Upper GI Outpatient clinics and MDT cover.
The role of the consultant is to provide leadership and co-ordination of the resident doctors on Acute Assessment Unit, liaise with the patient’s oncology team, ensure the patients are appropriately assessed and managed regarding their inpatient episode, progressed without delay on their management plan and appropriately prepared for discharge to avoid unnecessary delay. The consultant will provide daily ward rounds on AAU with attendance and contributions from the multi-disciplinary team and direct reviews as required and within the time available.
Another key role of this post is to provide resident doctor supervision, education and support for their inpatient work.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week within Acute Oncology and Upper GI Medical Oncology.
The role will be responsible for:
• Senior input within the Upper GI Outpatient clinics
• Supervise patients receiving chemotherapy
• Ward rounds
• Acute Oncology input in AAU and medical oncology wards
• Assess and manage patients regarding their inpatient episode
• Direct senior medical patient reviews
• MDT
• Supervision, education and support to resident doctors
