About the role

We are looking for a Yardperson to join our Herefordshire Council Public Realm Services Contract, on a fixed term 6 month contract.

This person will be responsible for the day-to-day upkeep and organisation of our depot and its infrastructure. This vital role ensures the depot is maintained to the highest standards of safety, order, and efficiency, supporting the smooth running of operations and upholding company standards.

What you'll be doing

Your accountabilities will be as follows:

  • Operating material handling equipment (such as telehandlers) to move and organise materials within the yard.
  • Maintaining agreed standards throughout the depot, ensuring bays are tidy and well-managed.
  • Establishing and maintaining robust stock control procedures, including daily ordering and stock checks.
  • Managing depot security and acting as a key point of contact for material deliveries.
  • Organising waste removal and managing associated paperwork (staff timesheets, waste transfer notes, material requisitions).
  • Supporting the Depot Manager in staff scheduling and acting as deputy in their absence.
  • Liaising with supervisors and managers to ensure effective stock and equipment utilisation.
  • Being flexible to work at other locations as required to support the business.
  • Consistently delivering high standards of health, safety, and quality.

Who we're looking for

The following experience/qualities we are looking for are as follows:

  • Experienced in public realm or similar operational environments.
  • Motivated and focused on maintaining excellent standards and controls.
  • Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to handle challenging situations.
  • Able to work independently, prioritise workload, and show initiative.
  • A strong team player who enjoys a multi-tasking role and brings out the best in others.
  • Trained in the use of material handling equipment (forklift/telehandler) and knowledgeable about materials and equipment used in public realm contracts.
  • Numerate, literate, and PC literate (MS Word, Excel).
  • Holds a full driving licence.
  • Demonstrates integrity, teamwork, excellence, and respect in all aspects of work.
  • Flexible, service-focused, and committed to upholding company values and reputation.
