**Important notice**
In line with our redeployment policy, we’ll prioritise applications from employees who are under formal notice of redundancy.
This is a new role at Beningbrough. The team is expanding so we can deliver on our ambitious garden plans and become one of the great gardens of the North of England. Our eight-hectare garden surrounds the magnificent Baroque mansion and we have a long term vision to develop the whole site.
This is a rare opportunity to work in a historic setting and be part of an energetic and hard working garden team, introducing exciting contemporary designs by Andy Sturgeon, while working with the other senior gardeners in the portfolio across Goddards, Treasurers House, Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace. You'll play a key part in the day to day management of the team, developing the new garden areas and ensuring exceptional standards of presentation. We need a strong leader who thrives on change and can inspire and engage others.
What it's like to work here
Beningbrough Hall and Gardens attracts over 150,000 visitors a year and is open all year-round, open 7 days a week in peak season. Some weekend working is required. It is part of a portfolio of properties in the York area and there is an expectation that you will work across these gardens during the year.
We have lots going on at Beningbrough. The gallery in the Hall has yearly exhibitions and we have a long-term garden vision designed by one of the UK’s leading landscape and garden designers. Work is about to start on the fourth area of the vision, the wilderness garden.
Alongside this work, we have proposals to extend the restaurant, retail space and car park. This is an exciting time for Beningbrough, and we are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic person who can play their part in maintaining and developing the gardens.
What you'll be doing
Reporting to the Head Gardener and Parkland Manager, you'll work with other senior gardeners to create activity plans for staff and volunteers across the gardens. You'll manage a team of staff and volunteers on a day to day basis working alongside them in the gardens. You'll demonstrate exceptional standards of presentation, excellent horticultural skills and knowledge, and an ability to engage effectively with the public. Your main areas of responsibility will be the Mediterranean Garden and the garden nursery. You'll be a Duty Manager on site, deputising for the Head Gardener, collaborating as a team, to ensure the property runs smoothly for our visitors.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
