Summary
We are seeking a committed and compassionate Special Needs Teaching Assistant to join one of our welcoming primary schools in the Ashington area.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone passionate about supporting children with additional needs-particularly pupils with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD.
While this role is primarily based within a primary school setting, we also have further opportunities available across KS3 and above for candidates interested in working with older learners.

- Contract: Ongoing supply, with potential long-term placements
- DBS: Enhanced DBS on the Update Service required, or willingness to apply via AK Teaching
Responsibilities
As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping pupils to achieve both academically and socially. Your responsibilities may include:
Supporting Pupils
- Providing 1:1 support to pupils with ASD and ADHD, helping them access learning and manage their emotional and behavioural needs
- Assisting small groups of children with tasks set by the class teacher
- Helping pupils develop social skills, communication strategies, and confidence
- Implementing individual learning plans (ILPs), behaviour plans, and personalised support strategies
- Offering calm, structured guidance during moments of dysregulation or sensory overload
- Encouraging independence while ensuring pupils feel safe, understood, and supported
Classroom Assistance
- Assisting the class teacher with lesson delivery and adapting materials to meet individual needs
- Preparing resources and maintaining a positive, organised learning environment
- Supporting with sensory activities, visual timetables, and structured routines
- Monitoring and recording pupil progress to inform teaching staff and SENCO teams
- Promoting a nurturing and inclusive classroom atmosphere
Collaboration & Communication
- Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and external professionals
- Maintaining open communication with staff regarding pupil progress and behaviour
- Participating in team meetings and training when required
- Upholding safeguarding procedures and supporting the welfare of all pupils
Requirements
- Ability to work 8:30 - 15:30 as a minimum
- Experience supporting children with special educational needs (SEN), particularly ASD and ADHD, is highly desirable
- Qualifications are not essential, though any relevant training ( Level 2/3 TA, SEND qualifications, Team Teach, autism awareness) is advantageous
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply through AK Teaching
- A patient, empathetic, and proactive approach
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships
