Summary
There is a degree of flexibility which can be tailored to the needs of successful candidates in terms of additional specialty clinic experience. A degree of flexibility is also required from successful candidates to maximise the use of available resources across Moorfields sites. There is a lot of support from consultants working in A&E and specialist clinics with a strong culture of training, support and cohesive working. You should have achieved an MBBS and FRCOphth/ MRCOphth or equivalent and have registration with the General Medical Council. All doctors are responsible to maintain a portfolio of their career over the last 5 years in order to satisfy GMC Revalidation criteria. If successful, you will be required to bring along your supporting information portfolio including recent appraisals documents when joining the Trust. The current experience of candidates would ideally be at least that of a year 2 or 3 specialist registrar in ophthalmology upwards, or having completed equivalent higher surgical training in ophthalmology. Additionally, they should have completed a minimum of 18 months as a senior house officer in ophthalmology and one year as pre-registration house officer in medicine and surgery or equivalent. Applicants from motivated less experienced doctors or more experienced Trust Grades and senior fellows wanting to increase their subspecialist experience are also welcome. Applicants should be able to fit into a friendly, cohesive and enthusiastic unit. They should be competent in basic ophthalmic surgery. They will be familiar with UK training or have experience in a similar system. They should have a desire to learn and enthusiasm to pursue clinical research is desirable. Successful applicants will be expected to participate actively in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with general eye conditions at City Road, and specific sessions covering sub-specialty patients under supervision, and occasionally on his/her own at City Road. The clinical sessions will give the opportunity of extensive exposure to the diagnosis and management of patients presenting with a range of urgent presentations covering various specialties. The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to: Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week. Supervision of junior medical staff and participation in informal and formal teaching. The subspecialty teaching sessions, dependant on their timetable commitments. Opportunity for undertaking research and audit. This post is designed to support the A&E Service throughout the week to maintain a safe environment and ensure patient waiting times are within target. Fellows will be required to work in A&E seeing patients both face-to-face and virtually using the video assessment platform. In addition, they will have opportunities to work within the Urgent Care Clinic where they will see patients and supervise a team of optometrists. Fellows may also be required to cover General Ophthalmology clinics. Duties will include: Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week. Supervision of junior staff in the service and participation in informal and formal teaching. Development of the Nurse practitioner role teaching, supervision & education. Assessment of virtual presentations using the video assessment platform. Triage of urgent presentations to the A&E Department. Management of patients within the Urgent Care Clinic.
