The Opportunity:
Long Term Futures are seeking a Pastoral Assistant (SEMH) with a genuine commitment to supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Working alongside a well-established secondary school in the Hackney area, we are looking for calm, compassionate and highly resilient individual with a strong understanding of pastoral care and emotional wellbeing.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting pupils who require additional nurture, guidance and consistency to thrive.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Providing pastoral and emotional support to pupils across KS3-KS4
- Working closely with the Pastoral Lead, SENCO, and wider support team
- Offering 1:1 and small-group interventions focused on emotional regulation, resilience, and wellbeing
- Supporting pupils in managing behaviour, navigating social challenges, and building positive relationships
- Delivering daily check-ins, mentoring sessions, and restorative conversations
- Assisting in the creation of safe, structured spaces where children feel heard and supported
- Helping to implement behaviour plans, pastoral targets, and SEMH strategies
- Supporting the smooth running of the school day, including transitions, breaktimes and reflection spaces
Requirements:
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
- Background in pastoral support, youth work, behaviour mentoring, teaching assistance, or similar
- Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who require consistent emotional support
- A nurturing, patient, and trauma-informed approach to pupil wellbeing
- Confidence managing challenging behaviour calmly and professionally
- Comfortable working closely with staff, families, and external agencies when required
- A genuine passion for improving the outcomes of young people with additional needs
