Summary
Multi Skilled Engineer (Compliance - Water Hygiene & Fire Safety)
We are seeking a diligent and compliance-focused Multi Skilled Engineer, based in the North East of London, to undertake statutory water hygiene, Legionella control, and fire safety testing across the MET Police estate of Police station and any other MET Police buildings. The role requires strict adherence to UK regulatory guidance including ACoP L8. The successful candidate will ensure all checks are completed accurately, recorded appropriately, and escalated when risks or non-conformances are identified.
Key Responsibilities
Water Hygiene & Legionella Control (ACoP L8)
-Conduct weekly flushing of little-used outlets in accordance with defined Legionella control schemes.
-Perform weekly shower flushing, ensuring sufficient flow and temperature performance to reduce biofilm and stagnation risks.
-Carry out tap temperature monitoring across the estate in line with ACoP L8 (e.g., hot water reaching ≥50°C within one minute* and cold water ≤20°C within two minutes* unless estate-specific thresholds apply).
-Identify and report any outlets that do not meet compliance temperature parameters.
-Ensure all tasks are completed following site-specific Legionella Written Schemes of Control.
Fire Safety Compliance (BS 5839-1, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005)
-Carry out weekly fire alarm tests, ensuring correct operation of manual call points and sounders as per BS 5839-1 requirements.
-Log all fire alarm tests clearly, noting the tested devices, results, and any faults.
-Immediately escalate defects or non-functional equipment to responsible persons or contracted fire system providers.
Compliance Recording & Reporting
-Maintain complete, accurate, and legible records in digital or paper-based logbooks to meet audit requirements under ACoP L8 and Fire Safety Order obligations.
-Report non-compliance, unusual results, or system failures promptly to supervisors or the Responsible Person(s).
-Follow escalation procedures where risks to health and safety are identified.
Health, Safety & Professional Conduct
-Work in accordance with all internal policies and statutory guidance, including COSHH, risk assessments, site permits, and safe systems of work.
-Use PPE, tools, and equipment correctly and safely.
-Represent the organisation professionally when interacting with staff, tenants, or clients.
-Travel efficiently between sites, managing time and workload effectively.
Skills & Experience
-Experience in facilities maintenance, building services, or compliance engineering (desirable).
-Understanding of ACoP L8.
-Strong attention to detail and ability to follow compliance schedules without supervision.
-Competent in basic IT/smartphone apps for logging tasks.
-Full UK driving licence (essential).
-A candidate must be willing to undergo a MET Police SC Clearance which could take up to 6 months.
