Summary
The Lung Cancer Screening Programme aims to facilitate early detection of lung cancer, ultimately improving patient outcomes and saving lives. Following a review by the National Screening Committee, the programme is set for national implementation from 2028/29.
This programme is available to people aged 55–74 with a history of smoking who are registered with participating GP practices. Through telephone screening, patients are assessed for lung cancer risk using an accredited risk assessment tool. Advanced systems help identify high-risk individuals, and where required, they are scheduled for low-dose CT scans, enabling early detection and improved treatment.
The Lung Cancer Screening Patient Contact Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing the Patient Contact Assessors (PCAs), ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of the telephone screening service. The post holder will work closely with the Lung Cancer Screening Team, other NHS trusts, and internal departments to maintain high-quality service standards. Reporting to the Performance and Pathway Manager, the Team Leader will provide leadership, operational support, and training to the PCA team.
The role may require travel to CT scanner sites and other hospital locations to deliver equipment or support service needs. The post holder should have access to a vehicle for work purposes.
The service operates six days a week, and this role requires working shifts:
Monday – Friday: 8 AM – 8 PM
Saturday: 9 AM – 1 PM
The role involves delivering high-quality patient contact and support within the Lung Cancer Screening Programme, including conducting telephone risk assessments, booking and coordinating appointments, managing patient queries, and ensuring accurate data entry while maintaining confidentiality. The post holder provides compassionate communication, supports diverse patient needs, escalates clinical concerns, and offers smoking cessation advice. They will supervise and lead Patient Contact Assessors, overseeing performance, rotas, training, and team development. The role also supports daily operational management, service improvement, governance, and KPI compliance, while managing DNAs, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to outreach and health promotion activities. Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate records, participating in audits, ensuring adherence to national protocols, and undertaking service development tasks, with the ability to work independently and travel to clinic sites as required.
