Summary

JOB TITLE: Senior Software Engineer - Process Automation (JavaScript / TypeScript)

SALARY: £70,929 - £86,691per annum

LOCATION(S): Edinburgh or Leeds

HOURS: Full-time - 35 hours per week

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least

two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

Our work is about more than efficiency, it's about giving people time to think, create, and serve. Today, our automation delivers the equivalent of 200 FTE in back-office processes, freeing colleagues from repetitive tasks so they can focus on what matters. That impact reaches customers every day through faster decisions and better experiences.

Now we're moving further: building automation that is event-driven, API-first, and cloud-ready. This is engineering with intent, systems designed for resilience, scale, and simplicity. Every solution we craft strengthens the backbone of the business and unlocks measurable value.

If you want to solve real problems with thoughtful engineering, and see the results ripple across teams and customers, this is your opportunity to make it happen.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Day to day, you will:

  • Design and build scalable, stateless services and adaptors in TypeScript/Node.js on GCP.

  • Develop API-first solutions and event-driven functions using Express.js and modern patterns.

  • Build React-based components for internal tools and orchestration dashboards.

  • Orchestrate end-to-end flows using our in-house patterns, including event schemas, correlation IDs, and error-handling strategies.

  • Implement observability with OpenTelemetry, Cloud Logging, and BigQuery.

  • Create reusable components for document processing, data validation, payment reconciliations, and claims handling.

  • Integrate with APIs, queues, and legacy systems using robust, idempotent design.

  • Collaborate with platform engineers on runtime patterns, authentication, and best practices.

  • Mentor RPA developers transitioning into software engineers.

  • Contribute to engineering standards: contract-first design, CI/CD, and code quality.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Core Skills

  • Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js) in production systems.

  • Hands-on experience with React, Express.js, and Docker.

  • API-first and event-driven architecture (REST, Pub/Sub, schema-first design).

  • Practical experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services (GKE, Pub/Sub, IAM, BigQuery).

Nice-to-Have

  • Familiarity with automation/orchestration platforms (Blue Prism, Power Platform).

  • Experience in regulated environments (finance, banking, insurance).

Mindset

  • Passion for clean, modular, observable code.

  • Curiosity, pragmatism, and a drive to rethink automation at scale.

  • Ability to bridge the gap between traditional RPA and modern engineering practices.

Why You'll Love It Here

  • Work on modern cloud-native engineering in a high-impact environment.

  • Shape the future of automation within our organisation.

  • Collaborate with talented engineers and mentor others on their journey.
