Summary

The General Practice Assistant role (GPA) is an enhanced administrative role, with somebasic, clinical elements. The General Practice Assistant supports GPs and the wider practice team in delivering high-quality, efficient patient care. The GPA role bridges administrative and basic clinical tasks, allowing clinicians to focus more on complex patient needs. The post holder works under supervision, following protocols and procedures, and contributes to improved patient experience and practice efficiency. The General Practice Assistant will support the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration tasks on behalf of the GP, freeing up their time to focus on the patient. In addition, the postholder will support the safeguarding process by completing Section 47 (child protection) and Section 17 (child in need) reports as required, ensuring timely, accurate and comprehensive information is shared with local authority childrens services. The GPA must ensure that they work within and recognise their scope of ability, escalating any concerns to the GP. The post holder will work closely with the Urgent Care Team to help manage high demand periods, support rapid patient assessment, and contribute to timely care delivery. This is a developing role for a candidate with a good knowledge of clinical coding and will include in-house competency training to ensure you are able to undertake the role effectively. Administrative responsibilities: a. Sorting all clinical documents and prioritising for each GP in terms of actions needed b. Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to patient notes c. Arranging appointments, tests, and any other follow-up actions generated by clinical letters or as instructed by the GP d. Liaison with patients regarding coding concerns and errors on medical records e. Be the lead contact for communication with our outsourced workflow team f. Helping the doctor liaise with outside agencies as required g. Signposting some documents to others such as clinical pharmacist etc. h. Collecting basic information from a patient following a pro forma i. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc j. Oversee the medical reports process k. Assist in the induction process of medical students and GP registrars at the practice l. Working closely with the Quality Outcomes Team Lead to ensure that GPs know what to prioritise m. Assisting the practice in audit and quality improvement projects n. Running clinical database searches as required o. Chaperoning p. Contribute to statutory safeguarding processes by preparing and submitting high-quality Section 47 (child protection) and Section 17 (child in need) reports when requested by childrens social care. This includes gathering relevant clinical and contextual information, ensuring accuracy and clarity, and submitting reports within required timeframes to support multi-agency decision-making. Clinical Support (under supervision): a. Take and record basic observations (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, temperature). b. Perform urinalysis, ECGs, and venepuncture (if trained). c. Support GPs and the urgent care team with same-day patient assessments. d. Support GPs during consultations (e.g. chaperoning, note taking). e. Assist in preparing patients for examinations and investigations. f. Carry out long-term condition reviews elements (e.g. smoking status, BMI, lifestyle questionnaires). g. Provide basic health information and signposting to services. h. Support with call and recall systems, follow-up appointments, and patient flow.
