Summary

Are you passionate about the coast?

We’re looking for a Coastal Survey Assistant at the Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme to support our fieldwork and data collection along the Kent and Sussex coastline. If you are an enthusiastic, technically minded person then this could be the role for you!

This is a fantastic fixed term opportunity until 26th June 2026 to gain hands-on experience in coastal monitoring whilst working as part of a dedicated survey team, based in Whitstable Harbour.

You’ll work within a small, supportive team to undertake surveys with high-precision GPS equipment along our coastline, between Isle of Grain and Rye Harbour.

You’ll support the team with processing and GIS analysis of data, to provide detailed insights on shoreline change, erosion, sediment transport and coastal morphology to support the sustainable management of our beaches and shoreline assets. The high-quality data underpins our approach to shoreline management, flood risk reduction and climate adaption.

Your vital work will directly support the resilience of our coastal communities and the sustainable future of our invaluable coastal environments.

With funding granted by central government, Canterbury City Council is in partnership with other maritime district councils, the county council and the Environment Agency to manage and organise the programme.

Key Responsibilities

Topographic data collection including beach profiling and baseline surveys
Operation of survey equipment and an ATV (Training will be provided)
Data entry and GIS-based analysis (Training will be provided)
Assisting with equipment maintenance and logistics
Carry out any appropriate tasks in relation to coastal monitoring as required by senior staff

Essential Skills & Experience

A-levels, International Baccalaureate or alternative Level 3 qualifications.
Requires some understanding of the coastal environment and potential hazards.
Ability to work in challenging outdoor environments and manage fieldwork logistics.
Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team
An understanding of health and safety procedures
IT literacy
Work pattern is based around the tides; the successful candidate is required to work irregular hours starting as early at 4am. Contract is 37 hours a week.
Full UK driving licence and ability to get to our Whitstable offices as early as 4am.

Desirable

Any coastal modules studied at school/university would be beneficial.
Working towards or qualified in Geography, Engineering, Oceanography or similar BSc/BEng
