Main Purpose of the Role
Working within Perth & Kinross Council is more than a job, it's about being part of something meaningful. It's about being part of an organisation that puts people at the heart of all we do and provides opportunities to make a real difference by enhancing every life we touch.
We currently have the following opportunity:
IT Engineer (Fixed Term until 31 March 2027) – PKC13300
£41,276 - £45,349
Carpenter House, Perth
Are you passionate about AI and automation and eager to drive innovation in a forward-thinking council? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for an IT Engineer to join our AI & Automation Team, playing a key role in delivering our intelligent automation programme.
You’ll design and deliver cutting-edge solutions using Microsoft Power Platform and Azure AI services, helping us transform how we deliver services for our communities.
You’ll not only build smart, scalable technology but also champion adoption and cultural change, ensuring automation works for people as much as processes. If you’re curious about emerging trends and passionate about making technology accessible and meaningful, we’d love to hear from you.
In this role, you will:
- Design, develop and maintain automation workflows using the Microsoft Power Platform, especially Power Automate, and build conversational agents with Co-pilot Studio to streamline business processes
- Support AI initiatives by leveraging Azure AI services to implement intelligent, data-driven solutions that improve efficiency and decision-making across the Council
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into intuitive, user-focused solutions, applying service design principles to ensure technology meets real needs
- Champion adoption and change by promoting new tools and approaches across services, delivering demos, training, and guidance to help teams embrace innovation confidently
- Monitor emerging technology trends and assess opportunities to enhance our automation strategy, keeping us ahead of the curve
- Ensure governance and security compliance, delivering robust, scalable solutions that meet standards for data protection and security
- Contribute to good development practices such as version control, solution testing, and documentation, following platform engineering best practices so that our automation solutions are maintainable, secure, and well-documented.
Skills & Experience Required
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience or strong interest in the Power Platform and Azure AI: You have worked with Microsoft Power Automate and Co-pilot Studio, and you understand the potential of Azure AI services to create smarter workflow
- Technical aptitude with databases and integration: Familiarity with databases (e.g., SQL Server or Dataverse) and handling data via APIs/JSON is important. You should be comfortable connecting different systems and data sources as part of automation solutions
- Coding skills: Some programming experience in languages such as JavaScript, Python, C#, or similar is highly beneficial for extending and customizing solutions.
- Problem-solving and collaboration: A creative, analytical mindset with the ability to solve problems and troubleshoot issues. You work well in a team and can collaborate across different units, communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- People-focused approach: You understand that successful automation is as much about people and processes as technology, and you’re comfortable supporting adoption and cultural change.
A Degree, HND (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant IT or digital discipline is required for this post. Equivalent professional experience may also be considered.
