Crynodeb
The Starlight unit currently has 16 paediatric beds and 8 Paediatric observation and assessment beds (POAU)
which are accessed by local GPs and Wythenshawe ED. The POAU is in operation 24x7. The unit also has 1 PHDU
bed. The bed capacity is made up of a number of single cubicles and bays. Prior to COVID IPC the unit had 24
inpatient beds and 11 POAU beds and it is envisaged the unit will return to full capacity once IPC rules change in
future.
A Day Unit is available for children with 12 beds. A mobile vanguard theatre has also been commissioned to
provide elective paediatric surgery. Elective paediatric surgery is provided for children over 6 months of age.
There is an active play service and a school. In the paediatric outpatient department, clinics are held by the
pediatricians and surgeons along with a number of visiting specialists to provide a full range of clinics including
cardiology, neurology, epilepsy, developmental paediatrics, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, allergy, renal, rheumatology,
orthopedics and general surgery. A Paediatric Radiologist is also in post and undertakes weekly neonatal
ultrasound sessions and regular X-ray meetings. An EEG service is provided and reported weekly by a visiting
Neurologist.
There is a 24/7 ED on site with a dedicated Children’s section. All major trauma goes directly to PED at Royal

Manchester Children’s Hospital (Oxford road) as it is an accredited Major Trauma Centre for Children working as
part of a network to cover the whole of the North West.
The unit is staffed by qualified Paediatric nurses and there are doctors (Tier 1 and 2) based on the unit 24/7. The
Consultant pediatricians work a hotweek rota and are available 08:30-17:00 during day time hours and on an oncall basis overnight and at weekends. There is resident Consultant cover of POAU on most weekday evenings (5-
8pm).
