East Calder Primary School is a vibrant, inclusive and nurturing learning community serving the village of East Calder and its surrounding areas. As part of the West Calder High School cluster, the school benefits from strong collaborative relationships with neighbouring schools and partners.

The total school and ELC roll currently stands at 453 pupils, which includes a well-established nursery provision offering morning, afternoon, and full-day sessions for up to 74 children per session. The roll continues to grow due to significant housing development in the area, reflecting the school’s strong reputation and central role in the community.

East Calder Primary is proud of its committed and skilled staff team, which includes 20 teaching staff, 2 Early Years Officers, 20 nursery team members, and 8 pupil support workers supporting learners from ELC to P7. The permanent leadership team comprises of the Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher, and a Principal Teacher.

Our school is known for its warm, welcoming ethos and strong relationships with families. We work in close partnership with local community groups and businesses and are well supported by an active Parent Council and wider parent forum. The school and ELC have a well-earned reputation for delivering high-quality learning experiences that promote creativity, equity, and wellbeing.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced Principal Teacher with a passion for Early Years education. The successful candidate will initially have line management responsibility for staff across ELC to Primary 2, and will play a key role in leading curriculum development, pastoral care, and targeted interventions to support learners’ development and attainment.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing strategic leadership and line management for staff across ELC–P2.
  • Leading and monitoring targeted interventions to support equity and inclusion.
  • Contributing to the leadership of pastoral care across ELC–P2, promoting a nurturing and inclusive ethos.
  • Ensuring curriculum and pedagogy are aligned with Realising the Ambition: Being Me, embedding play-based, child-centred approaches.
  • Supporting quality assurance, curriculum development, and staff CLPL across the early level.

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.

The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18.
