About Us

Rowans Hospice is a charity that provides free care and support to adults and their families living in the Portsmouth and South-East Hampshire region who have a life-limiting illness. Established in 1994, our income is generated by ongoing support of the local community, donations, legacies, fundraising and through our retail shops.

The Role

The Van Driver role will work across the Income Generation (Retail) service which is led by the Head of Retail who are responsible to the Chief Executive Officer. The role is based at Rowans Hospice, Purbrook.

Key Responsibilities (please refer to the Job Description for a full list of responsibilities)

Under the direction and leadership of the Transport lead:

The safe and responsible use of company vehicles including maintenance checks in line with current policy
The post holder will also share in team responsibility for the effective use of warehousing space, to support operational need and efficiencies
Able to identify income stream(s) when collecting viewing/donations so as to develop opportunities to maximise the Charity’s income
To transport donations, stock and recyclable items to and from customers, shops, warehouse or Rowans Hospice, Efficiently, safely and in line with agreed Warehouse systems, storage and delivery schedules
To deliver a high level of customer service putting the needs of customers or donors first
Provide excellent customer service to the retail shops and develop a good overall working knowledge of the practices and processes regarding stock, donations and the warehouse operation
Responsible for keeping storage areas within the warehouse clear, clean and organised, for effective use of the workspace and to ensure health & safety measures are adhered to
To demonstrate and maintain consistent and safe vehicle loading, securing and unloading standards
To drive Rowans Hospice Charity vehicles safely and in line with Ministry of Transport standards, ensuring within operational need that vehicle usage is as mileage, time and cost efficient as possible
To ensure both interior and exterior vehicle cleanliness and integrity is maintained and respected. Ensuring that associated weekly check lists are completed and submitted weekly with any known defects or vehicle concerns being brought to the Transport Lead’s attention
To ensure RHC uniform is clean and presentable all times
To support with Fundraising events on an ad hoc basis – this may involve assisting with the transport of stock and/or equipment to the event site as required, and this may be at times outside of normal working hours
The ideal candidate will have:

Clean, full driving licence
Excellent communication skills and collaborates with others to work as part of a team
Excellent organisational and multi-functional skills
Experience in driving a van within a business capacity
Experience of working in a fast paced, dynamic climate
Experience of working within a warehouse environment
Clear understanding of the principles of customer care and delivering a high level of customer service
Knowledge of, and trained in, health and safety/manual handling
Excellent understanding of controlling donations to minimise loss and maximise income for the Charity
