This post is for Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist within the North London Forensic Service, North London NHS Foundation Trust at HMP Brixton.
HMP Brixton is a men’s prison with a dedicated mental health In Reach service. The prison is currently undergoing a transformation from a resettlement prison to increase its remand capacity. An in-patient healthcare facility is being built and will be staffed by a separate provider.
The successful candidate will provide leadership to this team, with patient assessment and reviews taking place in the health care clinic, ordinary location wing, or in the 9 bed Segregation unit. The candidate will be expected to work closely with the team in the in-patient healthcare facility, including the in-patient consultant psychiatrist.
Prisoners may be referred from several areas including prison reception, ordinary location, segregation and other prisons.
The post holder will also be expected to assess new referrals to the service and offer advice on management as well as act as gate keeper for new admissions. It is expected that each consultant will see a minimum of 9 referrals a year.
The post has arisen through the internal movement of a consultant forensic psychiatrist within North London Forensic Service.

North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) provides mental health services across the five boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Previously two separate mental health trusts working in Partnership – Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust – we formally merged and became the new NLFT on Friday 1 November 2024. NLFT Services are based across both the community settings and inpatient mental health services in hospital. Specialist Services include prison services, forensic services, and substance misuse services. NLFS also support the UK Armed forces community, including members of the Reserve Forces, providing specialist veteran services across London.
To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as
agreed with the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures.
To comply with procedures whereby doctors report concerns about professional
conduct or competence of medical or other colleagues.
To comply with the principles of practice laid out by the General Medical Council and
the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
To demonstrate compliance with legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act, The Children Act.
To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
To participate annually in a job plan review with the Specialist Services Clinical Director.
To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and
seminars of the internal CPD program.
To comply with the regulations of the Royal College of Psychiatrists on
Continuing Medical Education (CPD).4
To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of Patients.
To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly
to the Information Department.
To comply with confidentiality as advised by professionals and Department of
Health Guidelines.
To comply with proper and safe discharge procedures for in-patients e.g. with
Department of Health Guidelines on Discharge and Caring for People: The Care
Program Approach.
To comply with Trust procedures that involve users in their care.
To comply with Trust procedures regarding responsibility to carers.
To commit to ensuring that people from all ethnic groups have equitable access to
appropriate services.
To ensure successful multi-disciplinary working.
To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring efficient running
of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial
instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the services
and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
To maintain good relationships with general practitioners, the CCG, Social Services,
and voluntary sector organizations.
